Metal Cover Over Boat. Slip

We have a boat slip that is under one of those metal carport covers. Right now ithe cover is just bolted to the deck. Do I need to sink a ground rod and connect it to that cover, or is it better to leave it as-is and not give the lightning a convenient path to ground?

There are still a couple, but used to be 4 in our slough. None of them have ever been grounded and none have had an issue with lightening.

Thanks for the info. Stands to reason that if it doesn't provide a path to ground (nothing but wood between it and ground) that the lightning would navigate toward a more hospitable path.

Check with the county building department to verify it is not a requirement.
