Dumb question of the day. All new boat motors I have seen have a specific break in routine. Do not exceed X RPM for X hours, etc. New cars - not so. What up?

If I had to take a SWAG, I'd say it is some sort of safety issue. Imagine that you bought your new Chevy Impala, wait, no you bought a new Suburban. (Cat makes more commision on that) If you had to drive it at say 35 mph for the fisrt 500 miles, and then don't exceed 60 for the next 500 miles that would cause a safety issue for you. What if you got rearended during those first 500 miles? Say you had to get on the interstate to get home and went 35mph! Uh oh. If you did not get hit, you'd certainly get verbally abused if not shot. Now, you go by that 20' Pontoon with the 50hp 4-stroke Honda, no wait, you buy the 24 footer with the 2.5ltr Optimax Pro. (I might want to ride with you one day) Dealer/Manufacturer says you cant go over 3,000rpm for the first 10 hours. Completely different scenario.... You get runover from behind and the boat that ran over you because you were going so slow is in BIG trouble. The car that hit you did so because you were not suppose to be going that slow anyway. On different note, when you link to the ECU of most anything built after 1999 or so you can pull a history that tells you stuff like 0-1000 rpms = 24hrs
1001-2000 rpms = 18.8hrs
2001-3000 rps = 25.3 hrs
etc. Its funny when chating with a customer and you have his expensive engine plugged up and he is saying "I never run this thing wide open, and you are looking at history and most of the engine hours are over 5,000 rpms. You just smile inside and keep working. Sorry for long post. Can anyone think of another reason about the breakin period?

Although I have not bought a new car since 2004 (no CAT the bosses '08 is not mine), I seem to recall no full throttle, vary RPM's and no redline for a time. Old school said vary RPM's to seat rings, the rest to allow wear without being abusive. We were also told no synthetics during breakin because the rings would not seat properly.
