I have two Masterbuilt electric smokers that have burned out heating elements that can not be replaced. I love the convenience of set the temp and go you get with electric. Flavor is also good since the housing is sealed and insulated. However, the non-replaceable elements are a major issue. Can anyone help with a way to add a thermostatically controlled element to the boxes I have to make them usable again? I know, spend the money and get an BGE. I'm just trying to find a way to use the parts I already have and keep cooking.

Thanks!!

Tall.....have you talked with Heath Sorrells at Masterbuilt? You can reach Heath at 706-256-3921.

How about rigging out heating elements from an old toaster oven or even a burner from an electric cooktop? Then using a digital thermometer to scale the controls against internal temp.
Kinda wild sounding but who knows?

I have not talked to Heath, but did talk to a CS rep. He offered a discount on a new model that has replaceable elements, once they get some in in February. I have thought of an oven or stove eye element with a thermostat. I was hoping someone else had tried it before and could help guide me around any pitfalls. I think I'll go by the local appliance parts store and see what they think. I'll post any results. Thanks!!

have any idea what wattage range you are looking at. Could you get a picture of the element? Just wondering...Oh. I am sure this is a 110 ac unit... right?

I don't know the wattage but it should be in the 750 to 1000 range. I wil try to get a picture as soon as I can. It is a short element probably 8" by 8" Since I have two that are broken I am planning on taking one apart just to see what's going on inside. After all, it doesn't work anyway so why not take a look? What am I going to do, break it again :-)

on the internet... are you sure it is the element and not the controller? If it is the element.. I may be able to help you out. depending on how they mount and such. When you tear it apart, let me know what it looks like.

I have an extra, new digital controller and it doesn't work with it either. There is what appears to be a burned/melted spot on the element. I'll send a pic as soon as I tear into it. Where were you reading?

Masterbuilt electric smokers... and saw where that seemed to be one of the problems with them..(burnt out element). Maybe we can have some luck and take care of this.....

I know from experience with a burner or dryer element, any condutor getting between the element and chassis will arc, then burn out the element at that spot. Is the MB element enclosed/protected from that or from touching the chassis?

I went with a propane smoker last year after reading the defective element comments on a MB electric on the net. The propane is just as easy (light and forget) plus it can go much hotter for different foods, same unit. Bout $179 at Cabelas.

The chip tray sits on the element, or just above it. I'm not sure how it's attached to the chassis. It appears to have burned out where the tray made contact. If so this is just a poor design. I love the convenience and flavor I get from this smoker. I just wish it was more durable.

IS there any temp control other than regulating propane flow?

MD,
What is Heath's position at MB? I don't want to stir up a lot of trouble but I have always found their products to be of excellent quality and there are definite issues with this model.

No, other than the butterfly vent on top. But, if you use a digital thermometer ($20) hanging inside ( then later with the brisket/butt for meat temp) you can get the smoker up to temp, place the meat, insert the thermometer, put the lid on and go watch Alabama and Texas fight for the title.
Crank up the heat during the last hour to toast the outside.
Good luck. Opinions are pretty cheap.

If you want to buy a new smoker there are several such interesting options. Now I choose for myself, I have a regular grill, but I wonder what happens to one of these smokers, read that the results are good.
