Has anyone seen any river otters in Lake Martin: not beaver, not nutria, not muskrats, but northern river otters (Lontra canadensis)? Thanks

More details please. I think I might have seen a pair of those things at AquaPaloosa last Summer.

There is a family of 3 or 4 that routinely pass thru the madwin creek area during the coldest winter months. I've seen 3 at once, there may be a 4th in the group. Very skittish, I surprized them near my dock a month ago and haven't seen them since. They are otters, not muskrats nor beavers.

I am a veterinarian and pretty sure of what I saw. They looked just like sea otters. Long (~ 3ft), slender with streamlined heads unlike a beaver or nutria. Also, the three of them were playing and swimming really fast. They swam a distance of a quarter mile in no time flat. They are in the west end of Little Kowaliga Creek. I will try to get a photo of them. Thanks.

West end of Little Kowaliga? That's my neck of the woods. I'll keep my eyes peeled. (of course, given my e-mail address, you could say otters are a common sight on Little Kowaliga. In fact, some will show up Saturday afternoon)

I hear they taste like chicken - is that true?

Last winter I was fishing at the mouth of Wind Creek and watched an otter swim and play on the sandbar beneath the bald eagle's nest.

A river otter hung around our floating dock for a few hours last year (Bay Pine Island). Neighbor lady saw it first and called my wife to tell her there was an animal on our dock that she thought was a seal. :-) One look told us it was an otter. Sadly it's not around this year.

I saw three of them Dec. 12, 2018 (just the other day) swimming in front of our pier in Coosa County across from the entrance to Pitchford Hollow.
