Subject:   Gas mileage is terrible in my boat.... HELP!

My smokercraft Inboard gets terrible mileage. I put 20 gallongs of gas in it and drove 60 miles and its nearly empty. It used 3/4 of a tank in 60 miles. I member someone suggesting a larger prop. How do I decide how large to go?

Any other thoughts on getting better mileage out of a boat?

I think I have a 305 or 350 engine... OH! and I never drive it fast, maybe 25 or 30 MPH....

Thoughts?

I don't know, 3 miles to the gallon? Not good but not the wost I' seen. Did this just happen or is the price of gas making you wounder?

You should ask the Cat Boat, our resident top notch marine engine man.

From my point of expertise, check the hull for damage, growth and smoothness.

Nahhhh, Its always been crappy mileage and I member someone saying a larger prop my be the trick. I think it was CatBoat that said it last year when he replaced my engine...

I will read your article...

Thanks

Well if cat told you it's a prop issue why are you asking again?
Da Cat don't talk no trash....

If the man said it's your prop....... It's your prop.

I am a mechanic by trade. Not a marine mechanic mind you. But he knows his business...

If Cat says it's this or that, you can take it to the bank......

I did considerable performance analysis while I was looking at boats a few month ago, and getting 4 MPG gallon (as you are) in a boat running at 25-30 MPH isn't bad at all. As an example, my new boat (250HP)will get 3.2 MPG at 28.4 MPH and this is it's most efficient cruise at plane speed. The same boat would get about 3.8 MPG with a 150HP motor at 24 MPH. These numbers were collected by the manufacturer (Evinrude) and are on their web site and I'm sure they are under almost ideal conditions. The numbers I looked at for other manufacturers were similar and there were not considerable differences. My ski boat has a 350 engine and gets between 3 and 4 MPG too. And remember, just a few minutes of running at full throttle can drive efficiency numbers down quickly.

Each boat will be different and will have a different optimal speed that depends on Hull, Motor, prop, boat size, and load, but from my experience you are doing average or better for a boat with a 305 or 350 engine and I doubt you will find a way to improve it much. Making sure your hull is clean and leaving unneeded weight at home will probably be your best ways to conserve.

Thats pretty good numbers you got there. Looks like 3mpg. Even IF you could improve on that by say as much as 20%, which is very very unlikely, you would only see 3.6. If your boat is even close to being set up properly, you can't gain 20%. Hope all is well with you.

Thanks Cat... I found a prop calculator and will imput data and see what it suggest. I should do some research and learn this stuff I guess but, I cant beleive a boat only gets 3-4 MPG. I do keep the hull clean and all so, it may not get much better. (might buy a paddleboat instead. lol

By the way: Whats a guy gotta do to get your secret mildew removale formula? My seats are terrible this year...

Call me today. 334-358-2838. Also, get me the prop pitch and gear ration you are running in your boat.

Don't have a GPS. Does anyone know the water mileage from the Blue Creek marina at the 49 bridge to the rocks? I seem to use about 5 gallons for a round trip this distance in my 22 foot pontoon with a 90 HP two-stroke. Would like to calculate the actual MPG.

It's about 8 miles from the bridge to the rock.
Use Google Earth and the path tool "lets you draw a point to point to point line over the satellite image". Measure in miles. I came up with about 1.6 Mpg

I did it for last years poker run and figured I would need about 40 gallons of gas and ended up darn near to the gallon in Gas usage.

That would be pretty crappy mileage - greycove may want to verify that he is running his boat with the carpeted side up...

time balancing on the slick ponttons with a drink in hand in choppy water. I will try it the other way and see how that works out.

My five gallons burned was round trip. 8 miles X 2 is 16/5= 3.2 MPG. I believe NASCAR cars at 200 mph get better mileage.

Now that's more like it. I think I added it one way. LOL...
I was thinking 1.6 was not to good.

I get right at 3.4 with my 1976 Evinrude-135 on a 21 foot 1800# cabin Cruzer.
