Actually, you can not just change out a bulb. The bulb which I seem to recall is a 175 mercury bulb has to be encapsulated with a mogul bulb socket so it will not risk contact with moisture.

I believe the owner of Green Moster Lights will have you buy the new electrical cord with the encapsulated socket and bulb which is then hooked into the electrical box. He used to have the prices on his web site.

Here is another approach. Obtain a bulb and a mogul socket. I do not think you will find these locally, but I bet there would be a source in B'ham, Atlanta or possibly Montgomery. You might check Grainger's in Montgomery or their internet site. Then there is a seller on eBay that will have the encapsulating compounds (the eBay seller name is "polymerproducts"). You will remove the cord from the water, unplug your box, and then snip the end with the bulb off and bare the wires. Using a six to eight inch piece of pvc pipe, run the wire into the pvc and cap that end, attach the bared wire to the bare wires of the mogul socket, tape with electrical tape and even solder if you like, screw in the bulb, and fill the pvc with the mixed together encapsulating material (it comes in two liquid which harden after you blend them). Make sure all the uninsulated wiring, mogul socket and just beyond the metal end of the bulb are covered in the encapsulting mixture. Then let it set over-night, place back in the water and plug in your unit.

There are also sellers on ebay for mogul sockets and also mercury bulbs if you do can not find a source near you.

Email me if you have any questions.

The encapsulating chemicals will cost you about $25 plus another $20 for shipping. The 175 Watt mercury bulb is about ten to twelve bucks and the mogul socket is about five bucks.

So, you are looking at about $75 bucks or less when you add on some shipping cost and a piece of PVC.

I have made my own unit, and it is still working over a year later. To make an entire unit, you also have to buy an electrical box, wiring, and the balast with capacitor. You may also want a day/night sensor if so desired. This is not to mention the absolute necesity of a ground fault system.

A mercury bulb system gives off the green glow. I built a 400 Watt metal halide system which gives off a larger white glow. The two different units use different type balast/capacitor systems.

Here is a link to a company which offers replacement fishing lights and when the bulb burns out you can just remove the cover and replace the bulb. Plus the other benefit I like is the bulb is encapsulated in a protective cover, so if hit by a fishing lure, etc bulb will not break.

Why do you think you need to replace the bulb. As I thought mine had burned out, but was not the bulb but the GFI plug had gone bad. Have had to replace the GFI plug 3 times now and finally just used a regular plug and installed a GFI breaker in the electrical panel and no problems.

In regards to getting anyone to help you at Green Monster all I can say is good luck and I would not waste my time. If I had to do it over again I would have never purchased his product.

Thanks for the info, guys. I really had intended to buy the complete light and cord replacement from the builder, but I have to get in contact with him first. The reason I assumme it is the bulb is there is some power to the bulb,it is just very, very weak, just a slight green glow. I figured if I could talk to the builder he could tell me the problem and sell me what I need. I have 3 lights, never an issue in 3 years. If I don't hear from him soon.I will contact the other company.

Choppa:

Since the GFI plug had already gone bad several times, I said the heck with this and cut the GFI Plugs off and replaced with a standard grounded plug. Used the same wire on the GFI plug, just replaced after I cut it off. If I remember correctly the wire colors are not standard such as red, black and white. So before I cut off the GFI plug I unscrewed it and checked the wiring to figure out the hot and the ground.

Then I replaced the breaker in the main panel with a GFI breaker. Knock on wood, no problems since.

The way I figured out the problem was I plugged in the GFI plug and the capacitor did not begin humming. So I said OK it has to be either the GFI plug (again) or the capacitor. So before pulling the unit apart I figured for $5.00 I would replace the plug first and go from there, if needed. But guess what it was the GFI plug again. So issue resolved.
