Carried my boat to the shop in Oct 09 with some issues with running rough, repair prop, dragging issues with starter. I carried it to the shop earlier than I had planned to, only because they were not busy at all and i wanted to be ready for this spring. Its been one thing after another nothing that I would say is major at this point, but still, I do not have my boat back. The last thing that has been backordered arrived thurs ( starter ) hopefully they can get it put on today and see if the factory starter fixes the dragging issues. Seems like in 6 months time We could have ordered the whole engine 1 piece at a time and even being backordered, had something going by now. I think i have been patient and understanding for a long time but I'm ready for my boat to come home. I'm not ranting here, just getting ready to post a timeline of the chain of events that has slowed down the whole process of getting my boat returned, and possibly keep someone else from doing the same thing that i did. the folks are friendly enough and do seem to care, today will be the day i decide whats next, fixed or not...

Would like to hear any comments anyone has, based on what i've posted

BTW 2005 evinrude E tec 90

May want to check and see if they lost their franchise with Evinrude, and therefore can't use/don't have the software needed for repair?! E/R pulled one in the LM area last year.....

Very good point. I did ask THE sales manager for the name of the factory rep. that called on them, I wanted to talk to someone face to face about the tank that had cracked and ask why, if they had redesigned the tank with another kind of material because of multiple failures, wouldn't that make it a recall ? Thats when the sales manager " who at this point was very defensive" told me thay wee not an factory authorized rep for Evinrude any more, and that they only sold Evinrude in packages. as in 'new packages".

The only existing problem now may be a cranking issue. It drags as if the battery is dead or there is a bad connection. Matt in service has determined that it could only be another bad remanufactured starter ( this would be the third in a row ). I ask him to call someone at the factory and get them involved, and he pointed out that unless I bought a Evinrude starter, Evinrude would simply say i had a cheap remanned starter. So without delay i said " put one on it ". that starter was backordered, from Evinrude, it arrived last Fri around lunch time. I suppose they were to busy yesterday to install it and see if it fixed the problem or not.

The service & parts Dept seems sympathetict that my boat has been there 6 months, and actually I'm still not pissed off, i just want my boat back.

I love my new e-tech, but I'm not real happy with the way Evinrude does business. Bombardier has always had an attitude, which is the reason I quit buying Sea-Doo products. I have discovered the same attitude with Evinrude in just the few short months I've had mine, and I'm grateful for having an extended warranty supported by another company. Evinrude dropped many good authorized service providers in a muscle tactic to sell their engines; dealers were told they were out if they didn't sell a certain volume...which was very hard to meet for marinas that wanted to offer a choice in engines. All owners should voice their opinion on this with the company.

How about loaning me some money - I will get it back to you sometime? Even if I were willing to put up with that kind of timeframe, my wife would not.

I left off at the point that the starter that had been backordered. it was ordered on April 15th and shipped from the factory on April 27th, it arrived at bucks island on April 30th. I got the call to come pick it up and that everything had checked out on May 5th. YOU AINT GONNA BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT, The factory had sent two reps ( evinrude ) to Bucks Island for a problem on another boat, So I got to speak with a human about the tank issue i mentioned earlier, and did mention the starter problem to him. I did point out that I thought it was unlikely to have gotten 3 bad starters in a row, but of course not impossible.

Anyhow, went and picked my boat up yesterday cleaned it up a touch this afternoon launched it back into the lake, and everything seemed to be fine. Then after about 45 minutes of a ride and three successful starts, i was backing into the area to tie her up at the dock. Well as it sat and idled for about 3-4 minutes it went dead. I was feeling an alarming sense of deja vu, and reached for the key............ The same cranking issue was still there and it would not crank ! After about 6 or 7 more attempts to crank the 2005 E tec 90 hp, I simply tied it to the pier. And came on in the house, to let everyone have my update. If you see a guy standing on a pier trying to thumb a ride.... pick me up.

here we go
new prop
new oil tank
new ( Evinrude) starter
7 months of being patient
free engine report
new fuel filter
change oil in foot
new plugs

968.33 worth of parts and labor and I am still in the same place I started.

The day you buy it, and the day you sell it. Sounds like you should have invested the money in a new gun so that you could put the old girl down......

Lucky said to stop grabbing him. We all know you can fix it, just try to be humble sometime..... Sure sounds like he needs to try another wrench though.

Whew, I think its going to boil down to the #1 cylinder "open circuit on the injector". This kinda makes sense if I am not wrong about what that code means. The boat was idling and started running rough, then died. I immediatly reached to the key and it was acting like the starter was dragging or the battery was dead. If the open circuit code means that the #1 cyl is getting to much fuel it simply could have fouled out or filled the cyl. with to much fuel to allow it to crank normally. I put the charger on it this afternoon and after about 2hrs of barely taking a charge, it did reluctantly crank. after 4 starters and a new battery the problem still exists.

New injector on #1 ???????? HMMMMMMMM

I did talk with the owner Tony, this morning nad he seemed to be sympathic to my situation. I certainly hope he can make something happen without me taking my boat back to the shop.

Let me first say, the information below is based on a Merc MEFI ECU system (I believe yours will operate the same, not positive though. Most EFI systems operate similar). Your injectors may "Batch" fire! Meaning, 3 at the time (V-6 engine or 1/2 of the cylinders at the time). This would mean if you have an "open" or any circuit operating outside of normal parameters or ranges you loose 1/2 or your total # of cylinders. If indeed your fuel system is "sequential" (I hope I used the right word) the injector circuit should be "open" all the time, and "pulse" with a ground circuit! In otherwords, the HOT wire to the injector will be hot all the time to ALL the injectors, and each injector will pulse/fire from a mili-second ground pulse derived from throttle position and engine rpm. If your injector is stuck open from trash, or debris indeed you may have a bad injector (but not likely) signal. The best way to test this is to use "noid" lights and verify EXACTLY how your fuel delivery system works. Then simply take an ohm meter and get an ohm reading on each injector, WITHOUT THE WIRES PLUGGED INTO THE INJECTOR. Write the ohm reading down as it reads per cylinder. If you do indeed have a bad or malfunctioning injector it WILL show up with this test. If you have a signal problem from the system I will have to test that for you as you are not likely to have the resources available to do so. Please don't go buy an injector and throw at the problem unless you check to see first. Sorry for long post! My .02 worth.
