Subject:   Buying Used Pontoon Boat

I have learned so much reading this forum that I would like to ask for some input. My husband and I are looking to buy a used pontoon boat and are really newbies to boats in general (we bought a PWC three years ago and love it). We have researched off and on for three years and I think we are ready to pull the trigger. I found two pontoon boats that we really like. One is 20 foot (90 HP Suzuki 4 stroke) and the other is 25 foot (115 HP Suzuki 4 stroke). We will mainly use it for ourselves and two dogs. We will sometimes have grown kids and friends on it but who knows how often. They both seem to be really good boats so I guess I have to decide which size will suit our needs. How much more would the 25 foot cost as far as gas and maintenance go? Also, any other items to consider would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

I am leaning that way as I don't want to find out later that the 20 foot is too small...

The question you should be asking to the experts>>>>> Is 115HP motor big enough for a 25ft pontoon?

That would be my only concern I think

My thought exactly. I would hate to be under powered... I am hoping somebody knows the answer to that question.

Well my decision was made for me as the 25 foot is sold. Now hopefully the 20 foot is still available...

We have a 24 ft Grumman with a 88HP motor. Its a 91 model. The boat is rated for a 90.

The problem with the older boat such as mine is that it doesn't have the larger diameter pontoons that most newer models have and tends to plow when we have multiple people sitting toward the bow.

Depending on the diameter of the pontoons I would think for yalls use the smaller boat should be sufficient ( based on your initial post). Also if you like to fish the smaller engine would be more efficient should you desire to troll.

Before you purchase, be sure to test drive and load the bow of the boat with some folks. You neither want the boat to plow or lift the motor to the point cavitation occurs.

Happy boating, be safe and God Speed to you.

Well, we did it. We pulled the trigger on a boat I found online late last night. It is a 22 foot triple pontoon with 150 HP Yamaha 4 stroke. Went down to Lake Martin today, drove it, and bought it at a fair price. I really appreciate your feedback. Once again I learned from this forum.

Cricket, I'm a little late on this reply, but the way that the seats are arranged is important for having enough space, I also like having a door on each side of the boat, you loose at least one seat by having a door on both sides but if you visit many piers it leaves the option open for wich side you put to the pier and the ease of access. 1 door or 2, you will love it.

Thanks, I know we are going to love it! I agree with you about the doors. We got lucky with a door on each side, the front, and the back. I say lucky because we did not know to think about that. Now that you mention it, I like the options of entry/exit even if we give up a few seats.
