A friend and I are going to paddle a stretch of the Tallapoosa River from somewhere below Horseshoe Bend to Jaybird Creek on Friday. I'm tempted to take a spinning rod along, but I've never been on this section and it may be a waste of time. If not a rod, maybe a camera. Any advice would be appreciated.

That stretch should be full of spots and redeyes, so take a spinning rod and a fly rod if you have one.

I agree..spots and redeyes should be biting on that stretch. Take lightweight tackle and you should be able to catch some.

Take the camera too. I've seen a few eagles up there - they will show you how to fish!

We put in at the hwy 49 bridge at Horseshoe Bend and paddled about 9 mi. to Jaybird creek. I had decided not to take a rod and that was smart. The river was not what I expected. The current was really good and there were shoals, rapids, really big rocks and small falls (18"). I was concerned about tipping over several times. That section of river is beautiful! It was like a Tenn. or NC river but wider. Wild azaleas everywhere. We did take a camera and we did see an eagle (it was big). It took us about 2 hrs. I'm planning on making it at least an annual trip.

Glad you had a good trip and hope you got a good pic of the eagle.

The river from Harris to Lake Martin depends alot on the releases from Harris dam. You might start checking the releases and try to figure when the water will increase or decrease in the area you are floating. (Naturally the surges will be well after the water from Harris kicks in)
