Inboard/outboard with six cylinder chevy engine.

Boat has new battery, rebuilt started, new solenoid, and new battery cables from battery to motor block (black) and from battery to the solenoid (red). When cold, get maybe one click from solenoid and the next key turn starts the engine. After driving the boat, the click occurs continuously every time the key is turned for a while but will eventually start the boat. May take 10 or more clicks. Seems to be temperature related.

It's a hassle to get the boat from the cabin to a mechanic.

Anyone have ideas what I might try next? No, can't afford a new boat.

Go get Merc part# 96158T. It is a remote starter solinoid. It should be located in plain view, close to a 50 amp breaker (red button)on the engine. Replace the solinoid and all will be fixed. I hope you did not do all that other work trying to solve that problem. Now that you are armed with all this info, you want me to come change it?

You also can take the remote sol. apart and clean the carbon deposit off the contacts. Bending the two tabs back on the bottom let's it come apart. Very easy to do.

Nautique, with all due respect sir, its' a $20.00 part. I have never tried to take one apart.

I hear what you are saying about the $20.00 part. But, if you are a long way form the source, to get one, the $20.00 part can become a $40.00 part real fast, not counting your time. I learned this trick from the parts house, where I bought the first one I needed. Since then I have done 3, for my boat has twins. Check it out, on an old one sometime and get back to us and let us know what you think. I just thought it was helpful advice, most of the time mine have acted up, there was nothing open. You also may want to let everyone know if it does fail and you get stuck somewhere you can jump across the terminals to crank the engine.

Thanks folks...finally got to right persons. Starter repair folks did say their might be a second solenoid. I will make sure mine has one and order from CAT.
