Monday 5/11/10 I emailed Tony at Bucks island, telling him i need some reassuranc that if i brought my boat back to him he would work with me somehow on the labor. I kind of thought he may be concerned that his reputation was on the line with me, and would tell me something to make me feel good about bringing it back up there to him. The email went unanswered and tuesday at 1:50p I called and left a message for Tony to give me a call ( never returned). I decided to ride up there after work and see if I could track him down. I did in fact find him, and we talked a few minutes and he agreed to only charge me for 1 hour of time no matter how long it took to diagnose the problem. WHAT ! i was thinking my boat has been here 6 months and not been diagnosed ! At this point i was as lost as ever. My thoughts were, I allready have 4.85 hrs of labor that cost me 385.58, and none of that was diagnosing the original problem...( Hard to crank and running rough intermittantly ) > in the interest of fairness, they did do some maintenance, fuel filter, spark plugs, gear case oil, replace oil tank, install a new prop, install a new starter. So it aint like they billed me for nothing, just didn't ever diagose the original complaint! The last starter was put on, after I asked the technician to get the factory involved, he said the factory would start by saying it needed a Evinrude starter put on it, to wich i said " Put one on it and when that don't work, call the factory". well the starter was ordered on 4/15 and shipped on 4/27 so i had yet another delay. It was installed, the boat taken to the test tank and run for a little over two minutes and started twice without incident. I went and picked it up looking forward to a nice four day weekend with my boat back in tip top shape 5/6/10 . In the approximatly 20 minute ride to the house it ran rough at least once but did crank twice, but when it idled for about 3-4 minutes at the dock it started running rough and quit. Did not crank again until sunday night.

In a post dated 9/19/08 i was starting to have and address the same issues as now. I was hearing a lot of folks talking about the bad gas that had been circulating, So i started treating the gas to address this issue, wich seemed to help a little.

Even that far back someone suggested "Cat Boat" (cat house marine)

Well last night i carried my boat to cat house marine, and finally met Steve. while i was there I think we did reslove part of the cranking issues by removing 5 ft of Bennington battery cables. one of wich had a nick in it.
THANKS STEVE !!!!!!!!!

NOw I just have to figure out what direction to take, it seems the whole problem starterd while the Evinrude was still under waranty, wich according to the letter i got today expired on 7/12/09. GEEZ man how did I miss that one ?

I sure wish i could get some help from Evinrude somehow.

Steve, I did put the boat in today, and it started perfectly, and ran up just fine. I played around running it as normal as I could ,about 5-6 minutes at 1800 rpm then up to 3000 rpm and for the first 15 minutes or so it ran just fine. Then all at once my old symptoms of rough running were back. I threw the throttle to it just in case it was loading up on fuel, but it continued to run rough for another 2-3 minutes, I returned to idle and turned it off. in the past it would not spin fast enough to crank at this point, but today it spins fast enough to crank, and does, but will not idle. Its like an older engine that you have to rev up and throw it in gear real quick before it dies, to get going. Whats your thougts on that now that oyu've looked her in the eye ?

I'm struggling now with, trying another dealer, or exactly what. I know Steve has said he is available to help any way he can

I knew the cranking issues would be ok. You had a total of about 10-12' of battery cable to the engine. I wish you had left it with us, so that we could have rode it until it acted up. At least one problem is done. It was nice to meet you.

Steve

I would take it back to Cat, Waver it and let him take it out and find your problem. There is no better marine engine man then Cat....

If there's a problem he will find it.

Listen to what Nancy is saying. Take it back to CAT and leave it.

I don't understand why you took it away from the one person in the last 2 years that actually fixed something for you. Unless he's just too far away from the lake, and I can help HIM fix THAT!!

Thanks for the responses, and no offense taken. The cranking issue was addressed with a starter the first time it had trouble, but the problem still persisted. I think at that point is when i started leaning away from thinking that the starter was the problem.

Steve, man i sure wish i had left it as well. but as you saw it was running fine while i was there and cranking strong as it could.

I did after it started the rough running stuff, cut it off and disconnected the neg cable just to see if would reset something in the "computer" ( for lack of better words ). But it made no difference, wish i had also tried the pos cable just to see if it made a difference. well I'm headded to work along the banks of the Tennesee river today so i'll try and check back later today.

Are you absolutley sure it is not water in the gas? The way your problem progresses makes sense that it could be. Water is heavier than gas so depending on where your pickup is you may be picking up gas only after the boat sits for a while. As you run the boat on the lake the water will start mixing with the gas as the boat moves and the engine will begin to run rough and eventually die. Do you have a fuel water seperator? If not I would get one. This may not be the issue but if you don't have one get one anyway. In my opinion every boat should have one and it should be changed every year.

I have been treating the gas with additives for about a year now. First i used seafoam, then i tried marine stabile. I really do not think that water or ethanol is the problem. But i agree that it does sound like a water issue. But with the engine code 51 open circuit on injector #1 cyl. Its at Airport marine now. When i was starting to describe the problem to one of the techs there, and i started with " 2005 ETec 90" and he started this little laugh like sucker...

I'll let you know what happens next

Do not know why you are spending money on people that seem to not know what they are doing, and ignore the one that can probably fix it.None of my business, just wondering.

There is no way I would have left a motor with someone who snickered knowingly. I believe the E-tec is too high tech for most mechanics, so they make fun if it. You should have someone who is first and foremost a thinkin' man work on it (Evinrude training and the latest software would also be nice). The Cat crew is the best Thinkin' man mechanic operation I know of, and I'm hopeful they are able to score some Evinrude software in the future (for when I need help with mine someday). But even without software, they can diagnose things the old fashion way using elimination and ingenuity.

Don't completely count out a fuel problem for that code 51. That same injector code on automobiles can be caused by an O2 sensor and fuel burn problems. Even with stabilizer, ethanol can absorb water and some stabilizers are alcohol based. The addition of alcohol based additives to a fuel that already contained alcohol could result in an improper burn situation. I imagine the code could also be caused from some other type sensors on the Evinrude motor. I hope you find a solutions soon, and I'm curious to what it is.

are masochistic. Buy a motor that works. Honda or four cycle Yamaha.

I swear, I been reading posta on here from as far back well i done forgot how far. BUt the one constant thing i see over and over. Is along the lines of TAKE IT TO CAT, or, THANKS CAT THAT FIXED IT.

I do agree that cat would make the best of the software if he had it, and he did tell me if he couldn't figure it out he had someone to ask.

The soft jovial laughter from the tech at airport was his acknowledgement that E Tecs do have some problems. When it's well it's he11. all the money I saved in fuel economy pointless.

I'll post and let everyone know what happens, and thanks for everyone posting in here or emailing directly for your input.

The software should become available late June from the company that provides the software for my laptop. I am sure it will be interesting to see what E-Tech is all about. AJ's Dad's Roto-Tiller was pretty hi-tech..... :o Keep us posted.
