Mack's son here. From what dad has said and reading the forum, it is apparent that CatBoat knows his stuff.

When I turn on the news, I see all these boats driving around in that sludge. What on earth does that do to a boat engine? Seems like it would destroy it in a hurry..

I really have no idea. I guess it would depend on if they had closed cooling or not. now you have me curious.

If the cooling system circulates water through small passages it would seem that the 0il - which appears to be thicker than water - could clog those passages. I saw a video of oil that washed up on a Florida beach and it had formed a gooey tar ball. It would seem that sucking something like that into the engine block couldn't be good for the cooling system.

Most of the commercial boats have closed system cooling and the heat exchanger usually is mounted on the bottom of the hull where it is in direct contact with the water. May not be true of planning hulls, but most vessels you see in photos are rig service boats and shrimp boats.

Don't take your I/O out in that syrup.
