I hadn't been on my boat in a few weeks, took the cover off and voila, on the steering column (on the rubber housing) was some kind of weird looking thing. It was about the size of the case an Ipod nano comes in (those clear plastic cases) or about 4" long and maybe an inch or two high, rectangular.
It was odd looking in that it wasn't a solid color but had odd pale green mixed in with an off-white looking color.
At first I thought it was some kind of hornet home, but nothing like the dirt round homes with a hole on the end I am used to seeing.
Anyway, I put on some gloves, turned a large garbage bag inside out and grabbed it using the bag and quickly tied it...yep, I wasn't too brave at the moment.
Never did investigate what it was, anybody ever see something like that "grow" on a rubber/plastic surface?

Sounds like a rabid nest of mud chiggers.
Man, good thing you got them in the bag when you did.

I'm guessing it to be one of two things...
- pale green/white ipod nano case
- mud chiggers
...couldn't resist blm...I am curious about that...perhaps strange shaped dirt dauber nest using unusual mud??

What's a mud chigger.
And, could the greenish thing be bat guano? We had some bats nesting in our boat canopy one year and the stuff they left behind (no pun) was green, black, white and quite nasty.

Actually, I had never heard of a mud chigger until NCII mentioned them above...only chiggers I know about are the ones I call redbugs...know even less than that about bat guano....
