I had an interesting morning this past Sunday... I was out doing some catfishing in the morning and was up above Camp ASCCA and Coley's Creek fishing near the banks with a minnow.  I ended up catching a fish that I had no idea what it was...it looked an awful lot like a very large (16-17 inches) piranha.  After about 10 years of fishing on this lake, I was a bit surprised to run across a fish that I have never seen before.  I ended up putting it in the livewell and cruising around the lake to see if anyone could identify it.  I had 3 or 4 folks say that they believed it to be a pacu!  Nothing like having a South American fish show up in our beautiful lake!!  Apparently, someone must have emptied their aquarium into the lake and I was the "lucky" one to catch the exotic creature!  Needless to say, it made for an incredibly interesting morning... Has anyone else heard of these types of fish being caught in the area?  Someone mentioned an Alexander City Outlook article a few years back that mentioned folks catching exotic species but I couldn't find it.

Did it have toofies ? People need to be careful about what they turn loose in the lake. I have been hearing more and more about the snake heads turning up in the Tennessee river chain ( don't know if it is true, but have been hearing it)
When people get tired of their pets they need to get rid of them properly ( what ever that may be ) but not turn them loose in the wild.

Yes indeed!  It had a nice set of chompers... needless to say, I wasn't going to get my paws anywhere near him.  Here's hoping he was alone!  :-)

Can you post a picture? Contact StriperNut and let ID it. I believe he is in the fisheries dept. at Auburn.

Art,
I'm a soil chemist, but I hang with the fisheries guys. Post a pic, and let's identify that beast! Did you clean him and drop him in some hot grease?

Tight Lines,
Wes

Stripernut, I'll try and post a link to the photo here to see about ID'ing the creature... If the link doesn't come through, it's on the the facebook page for the Lake Martin.

He will likely be hanging out on the wall in a few months if I can find someone to "prepare" him for his new location.

Thanks!
