I have a mercruiser 4.3lh that is throwing some odd readings to the factory tach in my '98 Doral.  The needle will tend to jump up a couple thousand rpm fairly regularly.  The motor isn't revving up any higher than normal.  The reading will often slide back down to the correct reading, but this seems to be an ongoing issue that I'd like to resolve.  Thoughts?

Are you sure that the electrical system on the engine is sending bad information to the tach? Or is the tach not processing the pulse signal properly, and giving you incorrect readings? Two ways to check. One is grab you an old tach, and see how the readings are. Other way to check (If the engine is controlled by an ECU) is to plug up a laptop or scan tool. Also, remove the tach, and look at the back of the instrument. There is a small dial that should have a 4, 6 and 8 on it. Make sure the dial is turned pointing directly at the "6". Hope this helps you. Steve

The sure way is to take it to Cathouse Marine and have Steve get it right.

Alot of times u can take that slide switch that is on the back of the tack and move it back and forth and it will clean the oxidation that builds up from moisture and it will solve the problem. Take note of the setting of it,so as u can return it back to that setting when u get through.

No, not sure where the problem lies...engine or tach.  I would guess tach is a more likely culprit.  I'm try pulling the unit and checking the setting on the back.  I don't have an old tach laying around, so don't have one to swap out, nor do I have a diagnostic tool.  It'll be next weekend before I can get to it and see if the selector on the back is somehow out of line.  Thanks.

Just thought I'd throw out an update for anyone who might run into a similar problem.  Sure enough, the selector switch on the back of the tach had somehow settled in between two settings.  I reset it to the appropriate setting and it is spot on with where my engine specs should be at idle and WOT.  Thanks for the suggestions.
