What is the GPS clocked top end on your Harris? Is that what you want to improve?....or are you looking for a better hole shot or fuel economy?...or all the above? Do you know your GPH fuel burn at top end and at mid-range RPM (approx 30-35 mph)?
I'm just curious on this real world information considering big motor comparison of I/O vs outboard performance since I ruled out I/O's when shopping last fall (for reasons we discussed before).

McGill, I wanted to ask you the same question about fuel consumption. I never did because I didnt figure you
had ever checked it. I was curious what mph was a comfortable cruising speed on your boat and the GPH it
used at that speed.

I did a fair amount of research on fuel consumption for outboards and many manufactures list performance data on their web sites. I've found my Etech to be a little better than advertised on fuel and a little worse on oil. I normally run between 3000 and 4000 RPM. At 3000 RPM I'm running 23-25 MPH (depending on weight) and at 4000 RPM I cruise at 36-38. My best (and most comfortable) cruise is about 3500 RPM, with a speed of approx 31 MPH and a burn of just under 9 GPH. These speeds are a few MPH better than listed on the Rude site and come from my GPS. At 3000 RPM, fuel burn is about 7 1/3 GPH and at 4000 RPM it's about 11 3/4 GPH....wide open burns about 26 GPH so I rarely go there and I burn less 1/4 GPH at idle.

Thanks for a very detailed answer about the fuel consumption. 26 GPH at WOT....I could feel
my bank account going down by just thinking about it. lol I usually move at idle, or just above
idle speed when I'm on a pontoon. Just enough to have a breeze so I can enjoy the water. Of course,
if I had a pontoon that would run over 50, I would have to open it up from time to time and outrun some of the slower
runabouts for self entertainment. lol

the Etec is very efficient at idle and if you move it up a few MPH you can get a decent breeze and still make a tank last a long time....and yes, WOT is fun at times for short durations..... I've received some very surprised looks from folks; The best was 3 teenagers on a jetski that was cutting across my wake and then pulled out to pass .....never happened.

I am assuming, after reading this entire thread you have a Harris Pontoon????? If that is the case, remember that pontoon boats normally are not very effecient and require lots of torque/horsepower to go fast. Assuming the question is concerning a 350 Mag and it is in a pontoon and you want to increase speed I suggest supercharging. However, you WILL NOT be able to run WOT for long periods of time because the engine would be working very hard. ECM change alone would net no real gain. Hope this helps.

Good Question.It is a brand new boat with two years left om the warranty so I would be limited on any mod's that would void the warranty,I was thinking ECM would be OK but don't know how much it would help.

Fuel burn is very very high. Top speed 50MPH at 5000RPM.Cruise at about 25MPH at 3500RPM or 20MPH at 3000RPM.Below 20MPH fuel burn is high as if working hard to try and plane out,Would like ti increase top speed under load..Eight people om boat. Speed towing is fine.As I told some else if didn't have such a nice swim/seat on the rear and ride so good I would have bought an outboard the are much quieter and less gas and don't need to be winterized.

Best way is to hock up a computor to your ECM. I dont know how the ones above do it? Maybe website?

they probably pull it out of their wazoo.
If you don't have a computer, you could get 5 gallon jugs. run the boat to empty. put in 1 gal of gas record the time and run at the designated rpm till it runs out, record the time. do the same thing with the next gal of gas and so forth and so on.
it is not perfect, but without flow meters and computers, what else can you do?
i am sure it beats the wazoo methode

Many outboard manufacturers have the performance data for their engines on their sites. In my case, the boat and motor I purchased (as a demo) were produced for testing and it was the actual boat used for the data on the Evinrude site and for info published in Pontoon and Deck Boat Magazine.
