Subject:   Prop question on pontoon boat
Date:   8/16/2010 6:21:50 PM

I have a 2007 20 foot pontoon boat with a 60 hp OB Mercury 4 stroke ( not bigfoot) with a 12.75x9.5 prop on it. I know that a pontoon boat with a 60 hp is not going to move very fast but mine seems that the prop is just spining without much thrust. It will go about 14 mph according to GPS. I was wanting to know what prop I could change to to give me more top end, I don't care much about hole shot. I can get it to go to WOT or about 6000 is as high as I have ever pushed it with no problem. I would like to pull a tube with it but it is not much fun at this speed.

I am not an authority on the subject but I would see what the recommended Max. RPM is and see if the motor will turn up more RPM than recommended. If it does, your prop needs more pitch or larger OD is possible. You could also have your prop double cupped by a prop repairer to give you more forward push and it will simulate a larger pitch. Nothing is going to change enough to matter with your set-up. You may be able to get an extra mph or two, but that will not make a difference for tubing.....I suggest boat shopping rather than prop shopping.

That sounds slow to me. I know all pontoons are different. I knew a guy that I would see on ski's behind his pontoon
with a 40 horse pushing it. According to test results I just read on the net, you should be running 20mph or more.
They may have put the wrong pitch prop on. Bad thing is that it's a guessing game getting the right prop. Maybe
you have a friend with a prop a few numbers higher you could borrow for a test run.  I just had another thought. A
Friend of mine bought 8 pontoons a few years ago. Had a problem with cavitation....Had to change the box that
the engine mounts to on all of them. (not sure what they call that box)...anyway, it was a factory recall.
