I have a 1994 Prostar 205 with the LT-1 engine. It is hard to start when the engine is warm. Starts easily when engine is cold. Problem just started a couple of weeks ago. Does anyone have knowledge of what could be the problem?

I came across this when I googled your problem. "Its nothing electrical. Attach a fuel pressure guage to your motor and tape the guage to the windshield. Start the car and note the fuel psi. It should instantly shoot up past 38 psi. If it creeps up or seems low, its your fuel pump. A lot of times the check ball in the fuel pump goes and during a hot startup your pump is hot and will not deliver the same psi as a cold pump. Don't let your tank go below 1/4. The pump uses the fuel to cool itself." I am sure when CAT has time to catch up with the posts he will give you a better response. You can always just take it to the CAT. He may not know much but he sure does know Chey engines.

Why he would start his car to check fuel pressure when it is his boat he is trying to troubleshoot. ;-) Also would not think (don't know) that his boat has a tank mounted fuel pump. I think you are right about the fuel system being the problem though - I remember the good old days of cars and vapor locks. Guess we need to put out the CAT light, and wait for the unmasked man to show up....

I figured the boat was on a trailer attached to his car! Now, that is real redneck logic!!!!!!!!!

I also have the exact same set up in my 98 Pro-Star 190. What happens with that engine is when you turn it off, excessive heat builds up under the engine cover. This makes the fuel pump very hot, and it begins to fail. Indeed, you need at least 35+ lbs for the engine to start. Problem is, the pump only runs for about 5 seconds when you turn the key ON. Then when the engines cranks, and the ECU sees OIL pressure, it will come back on, fuel running through the pump cools the pump back down and all is fine. I'll give you a band-aid sure quick fix, but don't do it forever and plan on replacing that pump. NEXT time it fails to start, lift the engine cover and locate the fuel pump. It is mounted on the rear of the engine, very easy to get to and it looks kinda like a cylinder. Have someone turn the key on, you will hear the pump come on for just a moment, that will help you find it. Simply poor some water on the pump. I use a empty bottled water bottle that I fill from the lake, river or whatever. Usually one bottle will do it. No kidding, it will fire right up. Trust me on this one. It will work and the water want hurt a thing. But do get a new one. Steve

Cat Boat,

Thanks for the info. I will try that next time out. Looks like a new fuel pump is needed. Do you do repairs like this and engine tune-ups?

We used to do only performance engines. However, over the past 4+ years we have been doing most all repairs on Inboard/Outboard and Outboards as well. Actually, this site is hands down the most supportive beyond belief! Which is why I try to help everyone on this forum any way I can. Your LT1 engine has some pretty unique design features, and needs good attention. I don't know how many hours you have on your boat, but that LT1 will run forever. It is very much like the Corvette engine, and probably has the Corvette engine covers, but some of the electronic parts are located in different places about the engine. It has (or should) have aluminum cylinder heads that require a different spark plug than most 350 GM based engines, and the ECM (Electronic control Module) is more than likely a Mercury MEFI system. In general your engine package is quite desireable. We have all the software for your engine. Should you choose, I would be delited to have you for a customer. Enjoy your day sir! Keep that water bottle handy. ;) Steve

Thanks Steve,

I would like to bring it to you sometime soon. As I was doing a little research, I began to wonder if I really do have the LT-1 engine. The person I bought it from said it was, but now I'm having my doubts. Trying to find out for sure. Either way the engine I have is a great engine, has performed flawlessly for me for 6 years, until this recent starting problem. Hope to be your customer soon!

Curt
