Have 1993 Yamaha Waverunner. Engine runs very good, but after riding, if it sits a while takes a lot of cranking to get it started again. Have used starting fluid (with oil included in the fluid to avoid burning top of piston) and it starts up. Somehow I think the gas left in the carb leaks down when it is idle for a while. I understand there is a small diaphragm in the carb that oscillates when the engine is turning over with the starter that is supposed to pump the gas from the tank back into the carb. Seems this diaphragm is not working properly. Any comments from forum members would be appreciated.

Hey greycove...I have 2 1993 Yamaha VXR's  which are both the same way.  I have just considered it as "nature of the beast".  I believe you are correct that the fuel pump diaphragm in the carb does not pull the gas the way they did when new.  I suppose a fuel pump re-work could get it back to starting like it did when new ...I took off the carb cover and drilled a small hole that would be directly over the center of carb intake so that I can insert a straw used  with my starter fluid when cold...one squirt and it cranks and your good for the day.  Another solution is to get a kit sometimes sold on ebay that attaches to your fuel line and you can manually pump some gas into your carb when engine is cold...I think   your original assessment of the problem is correct...fuel pump diaphragm assuming battery is at full power.
Note...do not drill hole while carb cover is in place...could get some shards of plastic in carb...i know that is too much info but just thought i would add that....

Thanks for the info, looks like you have two sisters of my machine. Did you cover the small hole you drilled in the carb top? If so, how? Any idea how difficult it is for an novice to replace the diaphram?

I just put a piece of duct tape over the hole...I have gone into those carbs to free up a sticking needle when the ski has been setting up too long but have never attempted to replace the diaphragm...looks like an easy procedure but it is a very thin delicate piece of rubber so I guess it would have to be put on just right...also, get a new one without much shelf life which could cause it to be a little stiff/brittle...but I am really just shooting from the hip here..best talk to someone who has done this procedure before...also, you may have to get the entire carb rebuild kit just to get the diaphragm...good luck with it....

Usually this means the carb was not set correctly before it left the dealership, its not really common knowledge but most jet skis get gas , oil, a quick charge on the battery and are sent out the door with no water test at all, at leats that was my experience when I worked at the stealerships. Now for the good news , I can usually adjust the carb correctly where there is little to no need to use the choke, thats right, you hit the green button, it fires up and you go ride. Now I know what you are thinking , how is this even possible, its possible because out of years of working on these PWC's I have found what the correct carb settings should be, call me or PM me if you really want it straightened out for good.
