Thanks for all the offers of help in getting petitions signed.  I can email a copy of the petition to you if you send a request to me at btwrlw@charter.net

The petition basically asks that LML not be the sole provider of mandatory water releases to accommodate the whitewater boating (canoeists) enthusiates at Jordan Dam.  It asks that Weiss,Neeley Henry, Logan Martin, Lay, Mitchell and Jordan Lakes ALL share-equally- in the water drawdowns to accommodate the mandatory water releases for the canoeists (and snails) - if they must have it. (Why should Logan Martin Lake be down almost 3 feet and all the other Lakes at full pool or down only a few inches on Labor day -- ?

Also, it asks that drawdowns on Logan Martin not occur until 10/1 like it is supposed to.  It has a place to sign your name and put your address. Initially the petition will be just sent to Alabama Power Co.  A formal complaint will have to be filed with FERC, which will involve more than just a petition - more on that later.

Get petition signatures, and mail directly to the APC address on the petition.

Another web site to check out about this mandatory water release is:  www.alabamapower.com/hydro/coosa.asp (see the Jordan-Bouldin Operations, Nonpower Operations). You will see why, if we don't get above average rains during mid-late summer, we won't have summer water levels in LML due to these mandatory water releases, especially on holidays when they run more water for the canoeists.

Just for the record on Labor Day, 9/6/10 at 10:21 PM here are the lake levels: Weiss -2.28 (being the head lake, it is first to get drawndown and also their normal drawdown for winter starts 9/1), Neely Henry -0.78, Logan Mar -2.49, Lay -0.25, Mitchell -0.18, Jordan -0.27.   Logan Martin dropped 10" from early Labor Day morning to late that afternoon running extra water for the canoeists below Jordan Dam.

One more thing, we did join the LMPA some years ago - a great bunch of people! We did bring this to their attention at that time, talking at length on numerous occasions, however, for some reason, they were not interested in taking up this issue.  As most know, they were and still are very involved with water quality and water clean ups which are all very good and needful.  I understand that the lake associations on Weiss and Neely Henry are very strong associations who have represented the lake property owners in a very positive way - like getting year-round water on Henry Neely.  It would be great if LMPA would help out the property owners to not only have good clean water, but - hey we just want water. We on LML know that we suffer if it floods -- we get flooded; during the winter, we lose our water for the drawdown, and now, during the summer -- we lose our summer water because of Jordan Dam canoeists. We need Help !

We just came back from the lake yesterday, and it is very sad that the 2nd weekend of Sept, a beautiful weekend -- the lake is within two feet of winter level.  The end of August it was down 2 feet then.   We believe this can be changed - If you do too, please help.

Thanks again.

e-mail sent for petition.  Thanks for bringing this issue forward.

Also, note the current message for Jordan Lake Conditions posted on https://lakes.alabamapower.com/

"Due to heat and dry conditions this summer, storage reservoirs on the Coosa river system have been extremely taxed. Flows into the Coosa have dropped considerably. Consistent with the Jordan license, Alabama Power will discontinue Sunday recreational releases beginning Sunday, September 12th until flow conditions improve or to the end of the normal recreation season. At present, we plan to continue scheduled Saturday releases; If conditions worsen, these flows could be eliminated as well."
