The high density foam worked well in the transom of the aluminum jon boat. It is very tough material but to make sure, as you suggested, that the motor would not ever get loose I am putting marine plywood fiberglassed together under the aluminum plate that the motor mounts on. Thinks for your suggestion. Houseboat

are you using Divinycell or Klegecell? why use either when wood done properly is the best way to go, we have been doing transom for 25 years, 10 years in Tallassee and don't understand why you are entertaining the thought not to mention the cost of foam compared to the cost of wood because no matter what you put in foam vs wood you still have to encapsulate it in fiberglass. Wood done properly will last longer than the whole rest of the boat.

Just one more thing that I wanted to add, basically food for thought, on your average houseboat your are looking at roughly 42 square feet of transom, that is for an I/O, at atleast 2 1/8 thick. So you already have to use atleast 3 to 5 gallons of resin (plus make putty) and several yards of various cloths. Why would pass on to your customers the extra cost of foam? Just a thought, I mean we do this all day, every day, 7 days a week, and bottom line is a great job that will stand the test of time for as least as possible.

Glad it worked out ok. BTW, pheonix, houseboat was repairing a jon boat not a houseboat.

I am glad to here that you are convinced that wood is still the best way to go when replacing a transom. I normally use marine plywood saturated with resin and with mat between all layers and on both sides. The boat above that I used foam in is just a simple jon-boat. The transom had permamently mounted aluminum frames and brackets to hold the original wood in the transom. I did not want to remove the permanent brads that held the boat together to install the transom so I built a mold, waxed it and added shutes to pour in the 8# density foam. The foam is light as a feather but hard as balsa wood or harder. In the area where the small motor mounts (6" x 12") I removed the foam and replaced with marine plywood and fiberglass to make sure it would not compress under the motor clamps. Houseboat

Speaking of houseboats, I have a 36 Gibson that I am ancious to get to work on and it will have to have a new transom, stringers, and completed disasembled and rebuilt.

I am sorry that I misunderstood, I thought that I read on one of these strings that you were thinking of foaming a houseboat transom. Happy that you have plenty of work, we are restoring 4 antique wood boats, 1 42' houseboat with another one coming right behind it and 7 fiberglass boats at this present time, would love to do any upholstery work you have because obviously you do not need someone for glass work, we can also do full gelcoat sprays and paint if you ever need anything. Glad to see everyone is thriving. Have a wonderful day!! :)

Sounds like yall are doing very well right now. The jon boat will be picked up today and that only leaves me one floor/transom job on a 17'Glastron. My full time job is in Tallassee also. I do boat work at night and on Saturdays. I think I know who you are and I have been to your shop. Are yall moving to Eclectic? You can send me all your houseboats if you want too! ha I do have a 40 x 60 with a 16 ft. ceiling to work in the dry. Great for houseboats. Houseboat

The 36 Gibson I referred to is my personal boat and will have to be done when I don't have much business. I also own a 32 Surfside houseboat on Lake Jordan that I need to do a lot of work on. Work is never done!
