Subject:   Winter storage of your boat?
Date:   9/30/2010 5:29:30 PM

My pontoon is on a lift over-the-water during the summer. I typically take it off the lift about now and rent a sizor trailer to store it on land under a boat shed during the winter. I don't like it so exposed to winter winds as it would be off shore. Is this a concern? Wondered if others move their boats ashore during the winter or leave them in over-the-water storage? Would like to know about pros and cons of these two storage strategies.

Call the various marinas and see if they have room inside their big barn for winter storage. Not too expensive and you can sleep nights and not worry about it during the winter.

In my opinion, every day that a boat is protected from extreme heat, cold, rain, dust, etc, etc. is an extra day in the life of the boat. Summer and Winter, doesn't matter.

My boat is 14 years old and is still in excellent shape. Upholstery, carpets and gelcoat. I keep it in a boathouse from which I can launch or recover in about 5 minutes, keeping it out of the elements until we want to use it.
Also, I would have bad dreams thinking about my boat hanging for months several feet from a hard landing if a cable broke.

Just my opinion.
COVER, COVER, COVER & COVER.

UV is at work in the winter as well as the summer. Less heat means less dry time after rains. Pontoons and fiberglass boats all have the same problem, ply floor and cloth fiber rot.

Any time you can cover it as apposed to leaving it in the open in or out of the water, your game ahead.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I saw an ad in a magazine last weekend (possibly Southern Boating)that was for a cover for a pontoon boat that raised up to the ceiling inside a boat house whenever you used your boat. It consisted of galvanized pipe put together as a frame that came down over the pontoon boat with the canvas attached to it and the ceiling. It may have been motorized. Houseboat

When I know my boats and waverunners won't be used for several days, they go in the garage; I then open all compartments and drains so they can dry out. Summer and winter are hard on boats, but proper care and planning will make them last a long time.

Mack...a broken cable is one I had not thought about. My over-the-water shed does not have sides. It would likely swing a lot in the winter winds. I'm like you, I would worry about it crashing on my boat ramp.

I ran across the ad I mentioned in my previous reply. You can find the touchless cover at www.touchlesscover.com or call 423-288-3490 and ask for Gary in Kingsport, Tennessee. Houseboat
