I am considering a purchase of the Masterbuilt 40 inch digital electric smoker.  Have any of you gourmet smokers have any experience with this unit.  I want one that will regulate temp well and easy to load chips.  Any comments about other models will also be appreciated.

Use Search function to backtrack earlier discussions, but I think it was Tall Cotton who was having problems with a similar unit burning out heating elements.

automating the BBQ process takes the fun & romance out of doing it. Isn't Masterbuilt an automated smoker/cooker? Heck half the fun is having your own techniques in doing the BBQ. Foodland has a great automated smoker that is consistent in turning out....well....they call it BBQ. Its very good but not something to brag about. Just my opinion...

Mack is correct, I did have an issue with their early 40" smokehouse.  The elements were burning out after a very short time and they were not replaceable.  This made it a very expensive and not very efficient boat anchor.  I was upset and was looking for another brand.  After some discussion with Masterbuilt they replaced mine with a new style smoker that has a replaceable element.  I went through two of the early units and now I'm working  on the third, a late style.  So far it has done everything I have asked of it.

As to the smoker itself, I see no reason to have a glass door or a light for that matter.  After a couple of smoking sessions both are translucent at best.  I have not used the meat probe either.  I trust my instant read and want to peek in every now and then just to check how things are.  It easily accommodates two butts on a rack, or 2 chickens, two racks of baby backs, or a whole brisket.

Some may consider using a digital, electric smoker cheating, but what I am looking for is results.  This smoker produces great BBQ.  If you don't want to believe me, ask the 350 who ate brisket last year at a wedding reception, or the 60 who demolished the chicken, butts, and brisket this weekend on our fall color cruise at Center Hill. I'm not a competition cooker, and probably never will be. Making people happy with the food I cook is all the reward I need.  This smoker will allow you to do that.

I came really close to getting that smoker, really close. Saw it at Sam's for about $275 (?), and hesitated. Then, Cotton's posts about problems with his earlier models, and I went with a barrel-shaped propane unit.
My gas smoker has some issues too, like the flame blowing out on wendy days, or the slot for adding wood is too narrow. But, overall it works well, and results are good.
Sounds like MB solved their problem. Regardless of what type you get, just do it. Paired with a reliable remote temperature probe, smoking is fun and the flavor that results is worth it.

Spend some time at AmazingRibs.com..... Good stuff on cuts of meats, recipes, techniques, woods, etc.

Thanks so much for the great feedback.  I have a barrel type electric smoker now but it just does not hold the heat well so I will be upgrading.  I really prefer the gas models so I will keep looking.  I really want one with a temp gauge so I can hold at a certain temp.  I will also check out the below post for cooking all of this.  Thanks again.

Throw away the temp guage that comes with any grill. Get a dual probe guage (@$45) that tracks meat temp as well as cooking temp at the rack level. The guage in my gas smoker was off about 80*. Junk.
My gas model came from Cabellas via MasterBuilt at $179. Moved the water pan up about 4 inches to ease adding wood chunks, not chips. 10 minutes and 3 pop rivets. Planning to add a 10-inch sheet metal skirt around the base to shield the burner from wind gusts. More rivets, but not difficult. Maybe sell the design back to MB.
Or, junk it and buy Cotton's electric model???

Meathead at amazingribs doesn't think much of electrics, but I can put meat on, go to work, come home that evening and never have to worry about the temp falling and ending up with raw food!  I'd love gas IF it could regulate the temp accurately.  I just haven't found one in my price range that will do that.  Charcoal or wood is the best if you have time to babysit.  OK BGE owners.  Let's hear from you.  I know you have strong opinions.

Now now, those of us who can understand and operate sophisticated equipment don't put down the Neanderthals who still rub sticks together to build cooking fires :-)

Baby sitting the BGE  is half the fun, but really it doesn't need it. I can put meat on to smoke and let it go several hours without looking.

Let us know what you decide. You have testimonials about the MB you are looking at, and an alternative (with fixes) with gas, and not much from the charcoal side this time around.
The debate will continue. The proof is what goes on your plate.

Thanks for all of the posts.  Life should be much easier than having to make decisions like this when you live on a lake, retired, and enjoying it.  I will take my time and see as many as I can in person before I choose.  You just can't find food as good as when you do it yourself.

Go buy a big green egg, spend time learning it, and enjoy.....that's my advice. That said, I see the lure of an automatic smoker.
