has been around since  before Columbus sailed the ocean blue.,,, It was something the early Europeans often smoked and dried, and therefore traveled well. Explorers carried it around the world, and now the variations are almost as wide ranged as that of pizza (and there are a lot of tasty variations available out there). Certain recipes and variations can be very localized as Mack basically stated.

Funny story. My wife visits Miami family often. Flies Southwest carrying 2 bags, one mostly empty going down. Coming back she packs an assortment of Cuban/Spanish foods we cannot find locally. OK?
Well, included in her stash are several "bricks" of cellophane wrapped guava paste and numerous bags of Spanish rice, along with several cans of creamed coconut (flan/ice cream). Must drive the TSA x-ray techs crazy, thinking they've got a drug mule and only finding a small grocery store.

That is funny.  A woman after my own heart.

For years, whenever we would come to Alabama, I would hit the grocery store and carry home White Lily Flour, cornmeal mix and a variety of other "southern" foods and seasoning that weren 't available up above.  I used to have a small freezer dedicated to keeping my flour supply.
