I think your will agree that almost any outboard or inboard of age will have a little water in the foot oil. For forum members, do you think a small amount of water, say a few ounces, is a concern during the winter? If a small amount of water freezes, is it likely to damage the foot?

I think I may worry more about bearing pitting and rust more than any thing. Get Cat to change your seals.

I think your first premiss is incorrect. You should have NO water in the foot. If the "small" amount of water freezes it could damage the foot.

Our outboard is 13 years old and has no signs of water in it. I would recommend having the seals changed also. A couple hundred bucks is better than $1200.00 (or more depending on size) for a rebuilt lower unit.

Your lower unit/drive is designed for oil. Probably 80/90wt. At no time should you have water in it. Yea, it may not freeze (probably not) but it is not suppose to have water in it. ONLY oil. Get it fixed during the winter so that you don't have to completely replace it another day. There are many shops around Lake Martin that can do this for you. Should you need me, let me know please. Your problem will only get worse over time. Steve
