Has anyone tried the Lowrance or Hummingbird wide angle sonar?

Is it worth the investment?

Is Lowrance any better than the Hummingbird models?

Reason for questions is I have a friend who thinks he really wants one, but question I have is it really worth the investment in terms of catching more fish?

It is absolutley 100% worth it. My friend has a Hummingbird 900 series on his Polar on Smith lake. The side scanning sonar shows you so much more. Just think about going through a area 200 feet wide and you can see everthing from top to bottom and side to side. We regularly mark fish and bait with the side sonar that we do not see on the regular top/bottom view. We have even marked a school of shad that was shaped like a donut with the side view. A spot or stripe must have just run through the school to create the hole on the middle. You can see logs and submerged trees on the bottom with great detail. I am sold on this technology. If you have the money it is well worth it. I think the cheapest one starts at $1000.00. My friends was about $3000.00. His is the fishfinder and GPS in one with the 10" screen.

Only way to go. Here is an interesting site for the new 2011 Lowrance Elite units. http://www.fishingbuddy.com/lowrance_downscan_imaging_elite_5_dsi It all depends on budget and features. The new Lowrance side scan Elite 5X DSI fishfinder can be purchased on the web for around $550. The Elite 5 DSI with the fishfinder and chartplotter around $650. They have other models with more maps built in. If I were to spend the $550, I would spend the additional $100 for the plotter as it enhances the sale of the boat in the future as most like to mark their fishing holes. If he wants a larger screen he will be into the HDS with screens of 7, 8, and 10inchs. They do get expensive but a nice size is the 8in screen. It all depends on space and money. Keep in mind the Elite uses one transducer with side scan built in while the HDS uses 2 as they require a separate transducer for the side scan.

I put the Lowrance HDS-5 on my pontoon last winter....I added the Navionics lake map package and both are great; a very good investment.
