Imports from Vietnam and China might kill Alabama's catfish industry.How? The FDA doesn't apply the same standards to inspecting foreign fish. I wonder why?
Do you trust fish farming in Vietnam and China? I don't. I suspect what they feed the catfish...

Contact the FDA and ask them to apply US inspection standards to foreign fish.
!!!Be sure to ask where your restaurant gets its fish before you order!!!!! Many (like Oscar's) will display the source in the restaurant or on the menu.

Watched a documentary on Asian fish farming. Yuk! Would never knowlingly eat farm fish from there.
On the other hand, the catfish coming from LM water is simply the best, even frozen for a time. No muddy taste or fish smell, and firm white flesh. No surprise considering the quality of their environment, Right?

I try to never buy Asian origin seafood if I can help it. I like the requirement to label the country of origin for fish sold in the market. Of course, when you eat it out, you can't always find out. I do notice that some restaurants have a little sign up that they only serve Alabama raised cat fish.
One positive thing coming out of the "local food" movement is that people are paying more attention to where their food is coming from and are more supportive of local sources. I like buying Alabama sourced products and I wish there was an internet source that listed all the food products made in Alabama and where you can buy them. I wish some of the local farms would offer local eggs. I've picked them up a few times at the Alex City Farmer's market, but in the winter????

The chicken auction is only a short drive and I'm sure Cat would give you advice for a chicken condo.....fresh chicken AND eggs will be at your doorstep.

I knew that was coming. Except I thought we would just add a major Chicken Farm to the new Cat Complex. My goodness perhaps we could raise our own beef, goats.
On another note, Trumans on Hwy 9 Santuck has one of the "we serve Alabama raised catfish" signs, and their catfish is good.

and feb could cart the chicken dung over to your place to feed the tomatoes and peppers....that would free up some of the toon space occupied by donkey dung and Mack wouldn't pretend he wasn't home.

has a long way to go in Alabama.... This is Georgia's. check it out. They have a very active program. The farmer's market program is a good start but it has to have more interest from local communities.

I'm sure my neighbors would really appreciate free range chickens wandering the neighborhood. But, the foxes would surely love it.
Feb has let me know on more than one occassion that any forays into poultry or goat raising would be solely on me, as he has no intention of participating. And given my tendancy to name all living things, I don't think I could kill something that I have named.

Well how about doing what my wife's son and DIL do...They raise chickens for eggs. And you get LOTs of fertilizer for your plants :-) When the hens stop laying just call McGill and he'll come get it for chicken & dumplings. Might even get a dinner invitation too!
