I have a Yamaha 150 Four Stroke Outboard on a tritoon. At the end of the season the speedometer quit working. The tachometer works. I have checked the wiring harness and everything appears to be connected. There are no other electrical/wiring issues with the motor or the boat.
If anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate them. Many thanks.

Not being sure what type of speedometer system you have, but I will offer you a starting point to check and see what has happened. MOST marine speedometers operate off of water pressure, and are not connected to any wireing harness (unless they are of the gps variety). Located at the back of the boat, on or around the lowest point of the transom or pontoon, you will find a long and narrow device that sticks below the bottom of the boat. This "Pick up" should be pretty much straight down. Make sure it is not kicked up/sprung from hitting debris. If it is it will be sticking back, and out of the water. Simply push it back down. Also, make sure there is a rubber hose/tube attached to it. That tube is connected to the speedometer at the other end. If your system is a GPS system, open the antenna/puck and replace the battery (looks like a watch battery). In some cases you can't change the battery in the puck, and the puck must be replaced.

Is there a way to bypass teh water intake on the lower unit of an I/O? I'm tired of having to try to get it cleaned out and really need a speedometer for skiing and wakeboarding. Or is there an easy way to clean it?

Most likely your pickup point is on the front of engine- right above the cavitation plate- maybe a little higher. Run you finger down the V part of lower motor and you should feel an indention- that is where the water pressure is picked up - most likely ran over a piece of wood and stopped up hole- FORGET YOU OWN A DRILL - take a small drill bit, operate by hand and slowly twist into hole- might take a littel while, but guarantee you it will work. That is what happened to mine. Took about 20 minutes, but cleared out. Good luck.

I always slide a rubber grommet over the drill bit. That makes it much easier to spin the bit in your fingers.
Usually takes less than a minute to drill wood out of the hole that way.
You can also buy drill bits with the hex shaft....they are a little easier to hold on to....slide a small rubber
hose over it and it works great

I've tried the drill trick. It still doesn't work. Is there a way to blow it out backwards or dig teh wood out from farther up teh cavity?

You must start with the smallest bit you have, the one that always breaks if you use it, and work up to a slightly larger one. I have tried to blow it out backwards, all that did was give me out of breath. On an outboard, you might try splicing the small hose that comes out of the intake hole, and then inserting a very small wire from that end, BUT I CERTAINLY DON'T RECOMMEND IT. The drill bit technique will work, must be patient. Good luck and patience.

I use a small fish hook on my engine to clean out the hole. Just take a small hook and straighten out the bend and use a pair of pliers to push in and pull out. The barb on the hook will clean out the trash.
Just make sure not to use too big a hook or when you push it in it won't come back out.

I want to thank everyone for the suggestions. I really appreciate the help. I will get fully armed with the drill bits and try to open things up this week.
