i have an older fishing boat with a 60 hp mercury, it will start fine, but as soon as you take off in the water and the motor warms up it will quit. you can start it right back up then take off again and it quits. any ideas

Fuel pumps giving up? Not able to keep up?

I thought it might be the white or yellow wire that partially burns up over time on the side of the engine where all the wires plug in. It usually burns into or almost into before any of the other wires. Not a mechanic, just seen it a few times. Houseboat

I experienced that problem one time on an i/o. same symptons. Oil pressure wire burnt into and was auto killing the engine past a certain rpm. Engine had plenty of oil, just not registering, so it shut down.

Sorry CAT. Just going by personal experience and others. Don't know about newer Merc. outboards but older models are just not as reliable as Yamaha and Hondas. Hard to compete against the Japs when it comes to reliability.
