I rebuilt a boat for a customer and he keeps putting off paying me. He has a business in Montgomery and it may not be doing very well but I have been holding his boat for over a year. Do yall have experience in the legalities of possibly selling the boat to get my money. I hate to do it but nothing works, my wife calls him so much he won't talk to her any more. He gave us a check for the total amount a couple of months ago but asked us to hold it until he could make it good. Help, Houseboat

First and foremost! speak to your lawyer before you do any thing. I'm not sure of how your business is set up.

Is he not willing to work with you at all? That is not good.

You have the check, that was the point in the security of giving it to you. It's a legal instrument . He will pay or go to jail.

Business can be nasty. But again, let your legal beagle advise you.

Thank you all for the advice. The guy is very nice but his experience with boats has not been a very good one. You can see the blue complete boat on my ad (Cole BoatWorks) on this site. I spent months working part time on it and he took the cap and repainted the metalflake finish in his body shop which also took months. I really want to have a good relationship with all my customers and mostly it has been so. I think I will try to get him to pay small payments but I will have to go see him since he has started refusing to answer our calls. If I have no success I will proceed with your suggestions and let you know if it is for sale. Thanks again, let me know if I can be of any help especially with transom and floor replacement. Hopefully I will be full time an a year or so.
