For all the striper pros, what kind of hooks (size and style) do you use when you are free-lining shad behind planers boards or on deep lines. I was at up at Smith this past weekend. We had serious issues hooking the fish. We had about 16-18 quality strikes and only boated two 10 pounders. Our fish boated percentage was pitiful. The strikes were big fish. They pulled drag but just spit the hook.

I use VMC 5/0 circle hooks in the spring with big baits, then go to 3/0 VMC circle hooks for down lines.

2/0 - 3/0 circle hooks score a high percentage of hook ups.

One of the best hooks you can use is a 2/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hook. The key to using those hooks is to remember to not set the hook and let him take it. Although, I think its more the rod than the hook. I have experimented a lot on this issue and found that when those pressured finicky fish hit and feel the least bit resistance they drop the bait. The best way to catch those fish is to set your drag as loose as you can as if you were going to let him spool you then tighten down and just reel it in.
