Just a note to let you know that older model boats with foam filled floors where non-closed-cell foam was used could add unnecessary weight to your boat and eliminate floatation if the foam is saturated with water. On some boats you can inspect the saturation of the foam by finding the holes in the floor where the foam was put in and digging out enough to determine if it is wet or not. From the age of most of the boats that need floor and transom wood replacement that I have seen, 20 years seems to be the average life unless it has been very well taken care of. What is "non closed cell" mean? Is there a difference in newer versions?

I think beaded styrofoam is one of the types of non closed-cell foam. Over time I guess water gets between the beads.

As far as I know most all new foam for flotation today is closed-cell. I cannot give you a scientific definition for it except that closed-cell is ninety-something percent non-absorbent. Put it in water and it will not absorb much water. I have removed foam out of older boats that was the weight of water, approximately 8 pounds per gallon or 60 pounds per cubic foot.

Poly Stirine is closed cell that's the stuff your water noodls are made of.

The old polyester used in boats is non closed cell meaning that each cell of foam is hallow and has cracks or holes in it where water can get in but not get out. It's like the foam your seat pading is made of just denser. Turns to dust as it ages leting in more water.
