Subject:   Is my starter bad?
Date:   5/19/2011 7:47:29 AM

I installed a new marine battery this year. Boat has ran good even tho every now and then I have to click the key a few times to get starter to turn over. We used the boat a week ago, came home and parked it... Yesterday I put boat back in and it was clicking very quitely... I thought the battery was low (not sure why) so I connected charger so we could get on the water.. Well, It never cranked but, lightly tapping the starter with a small hammer it would try to turn but only as I tapped... and it seemed to be turning very slow...

Its a Smokercraft with a 351 engine I beleive... Next problem will be if it is the starter I cannot get to it unless the motor is pulled or possibly removing the exhaust on top/side of engine...

I really hate to sink my bank into this. I just replaced engine last year... Starter is maybe 4 years old..

    Thoughts?

I was gonna say starter relay, until you said you tapped on the starter and it tried to turn. They are tough to get to that is for sure.

Cat, You replaced my engine in Prattville... Can the starter be installed without pulling engine.. ? If the exhaust were removed I think it could be changed out...

I will look through my notes. But, if I were to guess, it could be done without pulling the engine. But, don't rule out the remote solinoid. It may have a voltage problem. I will help you any way I can. I remember the boat. Call me tomarrow, and lets talk. We can discuss a way to bypass the solinoid to check it. Thanks for your past business. Steve

in series. But only run the 24volts through the starter.   Things could have gotten a little stiff through the off season.   And if it is the starter solenoid  sending 24VDC through it could help the contacts.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT SENDING 24 VOLTS THROUGH ANY SOLID STATE COMPONENTS THAT DON'T HAVE A REGULATED POWER SUPPLY.

Kinda surprised at the advice of hooking up a second battery. WTF? K.A., you come across here as a dime store lawyer and offering advice that could seriously damage someones equipment is just WRONG. But I can hear it now, if the dumbass is that stupid, he deserved it. If that is the best advice you can give, give up. Listen to Cat, he doesn't give bad advice.

Cat, I have never met you face to face. But being able to read a person very well by strictly what they say, I can tell you are a knowledgable mechanic. I ask you, have you ever heard of anyone suggesting going what K.A. did?

First, I would never take legal advice from a mechanic or mechanical advice from a dime store lawyer.  Or any other lawyer for that matter.

However,  while in law school,  I had the "Georgia Shaker" build me an engine or two.    Almost every time they started a newly built engine,  they would have to 24 the starter.

Note I said in the original post,  don't send the 24vdc anywhere but through the solenoid and the starter.

Incidentally,  If you have an old Model Ford with a six volt system,  they make an 8 volt battery that will solve your starting problems.

Money talks and BS walks.

I will deposit $10,000 with Cat if you will also.  I will bring a passenger vehicle with a 12 volt system and a 12 volt starter.

My mechanic and I will run 24vdc  through the starter and start the car.

We will then reconnect the 12 volt batter and start the car normally.

If I can do that then I walk with the $20,000 and you Kizma Anuice.

If my team can't do that You get the $20,000.

When I win I will donate your $10,000 to Children's  Harbor.

BS is already walking. Why do you have to have a mechanic with you? You gave the advice with the implication you knew how to do it. You can't do it so you have someone that can, ie my team, wtf? No one said it can't be done. Cat said you were going to hurt someone. I say the average person that reads your advice and followed it, BELIEVING THEY WERE DOING IT RIGHT, would burn their boat to a crisp, or at least the wiring harness. And when they say K.A. said that's all you have to do, who will pay the damage. Now, if you want to put your money where your mouth is, I'll take your bet, and as Charlie puts it, you're going to regret it. My Dad, God rest his soul, taught me not to bet against another man's game, BUT, leave your mechanic at home, you do it yourself and I bring the vehicle, I'll take your bet. Oh yeah, when you damage the vehicle you pay for it's repair as well. What say you, you in? My bet is you'll back pedal at this point. Anyone want in on this bet? The following comments are from someone that doesn't realize when he has made a stupid comment. Here are 2 recent ones. If I were drunk and driving a boat or a car and killed someone. I would leave the scene and show up when I was sober. Putting myself at less risk of a life sentence. (Doesn't want to pay the fiddler for the song)(Stereotypical of the profession) Why not just get a rope and hang him from the tree if it dies. )(on the matter of Toomers Trees) (K.A. doesn't mind if someone dies for poisoning a tree, but killing someone while drunk doesn't deserve a life sentence) I don't know if anyone else see's a pattern...... Jes Sayin Wondered if as a lawyer, you've ever asked anything stupid like this? Q: You say that the stairs went down to the basement? A: Yes. Q: And these stairs, did they go up also?

Not a boat mechanic. Had the same problem. Had the starter rebuilt and the builder said it was in good shape BEFORE he rebuilt. Thanks from some knowledgable people on the forum, I found out boats have TWO solenoids (sp?). I had replaced the obvious one near the starter. Went to blue creek marina and bought an exact replacement for the other solenoid, BINGO....no more problems. I would change both of these before doing anything to the starter.

I proposed a bet and I take it from your response,   that you are backing down.  And would instead want me to do mechanic work on your vehicle.

I have no idea what sort of vehicle you intend to bring so I cannot say whether or not it can be done on a hypothetical vehicle.  Be specific and I will tell you yes or no,  on your counter proposal.

I maintain that I can do it on my vehicle.  And I will stand by the $10,000 dollar bet.

I think Cat knows that what I am talking about can be done.   If not,  he has a first rate mechanic working for him, Mike, who I am certain would know how to do this.

And  I will make another bet with you for $10,000  I will crank an outboard clockwise and then turn shut it down and then  crank it counter clockwise.

So many years ago when I rebuilt my first deisel engine I had to 24 volt it to get it to crank for the first time.

not sure if the engine was too stiff or the starter was weak...maybe both

I've also cranked antique cars that were 6 volt with a 12 volt battery. It wont hurt the starter...but I bet it would

fry a lot of the electrical if it werent unhooked

Not saying anyone in their right mind would do that...but I've never known anyone with a sound mind. lol

All that being said...I doubt I would try it on a boat....or probably not anything else

John you are welcome to  tape anything I do.   I hope the bet will be taken up.

If it is not you can tape me and  some famous name lake characters in Hackneyville  this evening at 6:00.
We will be performing (making fools of ourselves) "THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE" as a fund raiser.

Then at Willow Point on Sunday evening

This forum is shared between the two lakes. So get used to it, when ever you make a statement that most certainly would cause someone the screw their boat up, I'm going to let the public know that they should ignore your advice. You make no comment about Cat saying you were going to hurt someone, but chose to spar with me. You talk to your mother with that mouth?

which character did you play? Sounds like an interesting play.....

also in the future you might want to dial down the bet amount from $10,000.  Maybe $100 and pride is enough, especially if it's on YouTube.

Some might accuse you of "buying the pot" at $10k!

Sure an interesting thread.  Some strong feelings here. Reminds me of the time I bought an older pickup been setting a good long while.  Mechanic couldn't get the engine to turn over.  So he pulled it to 35 mph and poped the manual clutch. Made a heck of a racket, but it did free it up. Ran like a top after that.
