Recently I've had some passengers that are heavier than me and most that ride my boat.

I noticed over the weekend that where the ladder attaches to the platform is slightly loose now and one of the screws/bolts now has spider web cracks coming out from it.

The ladder currently still works for me and the kids etc. but what should be done to shore it up/fix it?

Should I install a "plate" on the underside of the fiberglass to distribute the weight across a larger surface area? What material do I get, something hopefully from Home Depot or Lowe's?

Limited do-it-yourself skills here, easy suggestions needed.

There should be a piece of wood on the back side of the fiberglass. I am not sure what kind of boat you have but hopefully you can get to the back side of the surface it is mounted too. If it is wood it may be rotten or the screw is stripped thru or it may not have anything on the back side at all. My guess is that it is just fastened to the fiberglass only. I think you will need to put a piece of wood behind it and get some longer Stainless screws similar to the existing ones. Screws with nuts and large washers would be the best. The wood would really need to be fiberglassed to the back surface if possible. Bring it to my shop and I will fix it for you or you can do it yourself. Houseboat-(Cole BoatWorks on this site)

You could temporarily fix it with a piece of plywood. A permenant fix would be to use a piece of teakwood or some Starboard as a backing plate. Use the largest stainless steel washers you can find on the backing plate side

You may be able to get a length of aluminum from Blowes/Home Despot to use as a backer, 1/8" thick would probably do what you are looking for - drill it, and if you already are using bolts/nuts instead of screws, you should be able to reuse them. Might want to use a 100% silicone sealant or marine sealant between the bottom of your swim platform and the plates.

I was going to say keep the lard butts off your swim platform... But if that's not doable.

All the temp fixes here will work.  Or, take it over to Houseboat or my shop and one of us can help you out on a permanent repair.

I appreciate all the answers, I think I can get to it, I have a deck boat and the "deck" I'm referring to is the platform behind my I/O cover.  The ladder top is attached to it and through the engine compartment I think I can get to the underside relatively easily.

I'll take a look at what, if anything, is there now and likely go with something myself.

Does it matter the shape or size of the plate on the underside of the deck?  Obviously bigger spreads the stress better but does the shape matter?  Rectangle vs. square vs. something else?

Again, thanks in advance.

As long as it fits the contour of the surface it will be against. It may eventually rip the glass if the wood is not fiberglassed in.
