Today I ran my Mariner 90 on two short trips for about 10 minutes each. When I got home my kid tells me he used the boat yesterday and used all the gas oil mix. He refilled my gas cans with pure gas. (and didn't tell me). I used one of those cans of pure gas to refill the boat. As I said in the beginning I ran the boat and noticed no problems. It's an old outboard. Have I dodged a bullet or is there a bad surprised waiting for me?

You probably had some oil from what was still in the tank. I'd drain the fuel lines and make anything else that gets to the engine has oil in it.....if it's still running, you probably dodged a bullet but that's only a guess.....Cat?

I would say you are ok. You probably have a 15 to 20 gallon tank. If you just topped the tank off with 5 gallons you probably diluted the oil gas mixture that was already in the tank but not enough to cause damage. I second draining the gas line and the fuel/water separator if you have one.

Sadly it is a 12 gallon tank that had less than one gallon remaining. I put in 6 gallons of pure gas. Oh Well, what's done is done. I will drain all lines and hope for the best.

Ya know what they say about cigarettes. Each one you smoke takes 20 min off your life.
Just find the cross reference to raw gas in a 2 cycle and you will have your answer.

Sorry bud.

Cat? How can you tell when the rings in a 2 stroke are gone? it already smokes.
Will it rattle just before the rod shoots through the block? Be cool to tare the engine down and look it over... Or get insurance.

Usually siezes slowley. Bogs down and dies. No more smoke really.

It was running when I docked it Sunday. I will go and drain all fuel lines. Fill her back up and hope for the best. Hopefully I can use it until I can find a newer used one to purchase. The used pontoon market this year has been terrible. Nothing to buy except junkers and like new stuff.

By chance have you run a compression check on it?  That might be an indicator of the extent of damage.  If it isn't getting lubrication, and like CAT says slowly starts to get hot from the extra friction it might still run because all of the metal parts expand just a bit as they heat up - but when it cools down and the metal shrinks it might expose some chafing of the cylinder walls and pistin rings that would show up in a compression check.  Mayb CAT can tell you what would be acceptable readings for an older outboard.

Compression readings were not acceptable before this incident. One cylinder was low. Motor is old my hope is just to put around until I can find something newer in my price range.

If anybody cares...I oiled her up on Sunday and it seemed to run no worse than every. It's an old motor that was already a slight smoker.
