I have water leaking from outside into the bilge of my 1998 SeaRay 210 bowrider. I assume it is from outside as it is cool to touch not hot like from engine. When the boat is beached and the foot is raised it seems to increase the flow. I did not notice it until bilge pump failed. I thought about plugging the drain and filling the bilge with water while on the trailer to see if a source can be identified.  I don't see any cracks around the gimbal assembly and it feels tight when I try to shake it.

Any suggetions( other than fix the bilge pump)?

More than likely, you have either a gimble bellows or a shift bellows with a hole in it.

Your boat is very new to have a rotten transom. Normally it should have lasted a few more years. I have found a "95" model of another make to be rotten. Most that I do are 93 and older. You might try to tighten the nuts in the inside. If they deform the flat surface they are mounted on, the wood may be rotten. Also tap on the inside surface of the transom with a hammer, it should sound hard and solid. You can also take a hole saw and cut just the thin fiberglass off the inside surface to expose the wood near the bolts. Hopefully I am wrong. Houseboat

I have found it best in business to not jump to the extreme, without first checking the simple. Typically you will scare a customer so bad that they either buy something differant, or take it somewhere else only to find that it was a simple repair, and then they are upset at you for freaking them out. Most likely a shift bellow like clearwater said and a very common problem to boot!

Whopper, dont try to flood the boat from the inside, because you will most likely find it, but you will also be buying a starter in about 2 weeks after doing that. Starters dont like going under water, and it will in order to find your leak.  Jeff

Check the side outlet from the bilge pump exhaust. It is supposed to have a backflow preventer in the tubing from the pump to the outlet. My boat either doesn't have one or it is busted. If I leave the boat at a steep angle, like when launching from a trailer (or beached in your case), and the outlet is submerged for any length of time, water flows thru the tube and into the bilge, where it seeks to reach the same water level as the lake. Not good if you don't know about it.

I would second what Clearwater has said.

When you raise the drive the flow intends to increase?
If there is a rip in the bellows it will tend to stretch and open up a split as the drive is raised. In all likley hood unless you have the proper sockets this is a marina job. While your at it, if your asked to replace the gimbal bearing, it's a good idea while you have it this far down. They are not jacking you up........ change it. just a good idea.

And I have found it wise to listen?? The suggestion that House offered is simple, and it would eliminate a possible cause of the problem? If not, then you know the transom is solid, Right?? And how to test it in the future?
Thanks, House.

Thats my problem with Emerald coast, its not so much the money as it is that its the same ole same ole, but not to mention Stu went to 650 this year??? Are you effin kidding me?? And there is nothing more than I would like to see and sponsor a major event on this lake like a real poker run, or a shootout, but as you know they dont like our kind round here!! I will say they like you a good bit more than me lol. It is really sad as you know a major boating event can create huge revenue for the entire area from food, to lodging to gas to beer etc! Maybe we should try to do it anyway and just pay the tickets??

Please let us know what you find. Not knowing how long it has been since the bellows were replaced and whether or not the boat has been left out in the weather unprotected for a long time, it is a guess on our part as to what is wrong with it. Hope it is an easy fix. Houseboat

Indeed, there is a split in the shift bellows. I saw that earlier, but did not think it could be the source as there is a hose clamp  snugged up tight around the shift connection rod going through the transom. Will have to get it to Clearwater or CAT  etc,  whenever I can get back to the Lake. Again thanks for the input/
