From my blog and co-author:
While teaching elementary school, I once had to be out almost a week for
jury duty. With contained excitement, I told all my classes
beforehand. Now, elementary aged children sometimes don't quite
understand that teachers DO have to miss school on occasion. They have a
hard time with the concept that we live outside the classroom, that we
have boyfriends, husbands, wives, or families, etc.
After missing
4 days of my classes, I finally returned. One of my innocent first
graders came running up to me, gave me a huge hug, and asked, "Where
have YOU been?"
I answered, "Remember, sweetie, I told you that I had jury duty last week!"
After
a few seconds, she looked up at me with her great, big, 'ole eyes and
with the most sincere expression announced that her mother, too, "sold
JURY!"
Guess she thought I'd been out all week selling AVON!
