Subject:   APCO RUMOR MILL
Date:   10/11/2011 4:08:50 PM

Sporadically this summer there was a rumor floating around that APCO would lower the water level up to 10ft to repair a part on the dam...... below was my question to LMLPA and in the next post was their response. Could you please help put a RUMOR that is running rampant around the lake to rest. Rumor is that "APCO is going to take the water down X (7 to 10)feet to fix a_______ (part-leak) and would be down for some time while repairs are made." People (more than one) are saying that they have talked to a person that made the part for the repair. I know in the past someone with LMLPA checked with their APCO contact to dispell the rumor - Could you please do this again so we can put the rumor to rest. - again.

An LMLPA Member asked us to address a rumor that has been floating around. There are several variations, but the rumor contends that APCO is planning on lowering the lake 7 to 10 feet to do repairs to a part of the Dam. This rumor has no basis in fact. LMLPA has contacted APCO Shoreline Management and verified that as of this time there are no plans to draw the lake down outside of the normal sea...sonal drawdown taking place between October 1 and December 31. This will take the lake to winter pool of 460 ft above sea level. Further, the functional part of a hydroelectric dam - the turbine- can be repaired and replaced by simply taking it offline. There is no need to drain the lake to perform this kind of maintenance. If at any time residents have questions or concerns about Alabama Power''s management of the lake, they may contact APCO Shoreline Management at 205.472.0481.

I heard the water was going down because APCO was using it to power the new rumor mill. Sorry, too easy. We now return to our regularly scheduled, peaceful lake. TC

Honestly, from my personal perspective, it would be neat if the rumor was true.

From my fisherman's mind it would be interesting to get a visual on all that bottom stuff I see on my graph.

Launches would be easier repaired or lengthened.

Equipment could more easily access and dredge ( up to what APCO allows) for those folks who have places in shallow areas and have no water during low water times.

I see much good that could come from lowering the water 7 to 10 feet more than winter level, on occasion.

I agree, it would be cool. I know I could retrieve 3 cell phones. Countless beer bottles, a crowbar, a hammer, and who knows what else. But my fear would be, there would be a drought following and we'd never get back to full. It's been an awesome summer having. The lake mostly full all year.
