Just wondering if anyone has had any success using umbrella rigs on Lake Martin for Stripers?

Umbrella rigs can work but come with some real limitations. The biggest drawback is that you have no way of really knowing how deep they are running. Speed, distance back and the baits you attach to them will all change the running depth. That represents allot of variable to try and compensate for. If you aren't fishing for stripers at the correct depth, you're pretty much wasting your time and if you don't know how deep the rig is running.... Also, when you do hook up, you have to fight both the fish and the umbrella rig on the retreive. That takes most of the fun out of it. Lastly, when you get the cost of the rig itself plus all of the baits (5-7-9) that you can load on to it, an umbrella rig gets pretty expensive. And if you don't know where it is in the water, it's easy to lose on a snag.

Wednesday was a beautiful day, so I played hookie and spent a few hours hunting for stripes from Kowaliga to Parker Creek. Saw lots of marks at 20-25' but judging by what was hooked, they were all spots. Went home with a great mess of good eating, but no stripers.

Hey guys, I'm new to striper fishing and have been watching y'all for a while. I appreciate all yalls help without giving away your spots. I followed the advice Wes gave about this time a year ago and went Thursday and searched the Paces Point area using a downriigger with a buck tail jig and a chartreuse trailer i was trolling 60' deep and marking fish about 30'. Only had one dowrigger cause bass pro messed up my order. Searched all morning with nothing until 10am. Then I got into em for about an hour. Only caught 4-5 pounders but it was still a blast. I'm going agin this week if the weather holds up and I'll keep y'all posted..
