Monsanto and the growth hormores? I've never been particularly excited about the stuff they put out to increase yields in plant-based food. But, now I'm rethinking that, based on this growth hormone that is FDA approved (based on a 3 month study feeding it to rats) that is being marketed to dairy farmers for milk production. My grandfather was a farmer almost all of his life, so I know a wee bit about farming, but almost nothing about commercial farming. Does anyone know anything about this? I do try to buy organic produce for some things, but I've never gone out of my way to buy organic dairy (most of it has a longer shelf life than non-organic dairy) nor have I gone out of my way to buy grass fed beef or organic chicken. I'm wondering what the people on this forum think about all this.

All this genetic tinkering has consequences...some good yes but Monsanto and the like care only about yields, shipping tolerance and shelf life that increase their sales of seeds & pesticides.

The seed manufacturers and yes - the US Department of Agriculture - don't seem to care about nutritional priorities. For example most of the "new" corn only has about 40% of the protein of the original seed strains. It's cardboard. If Michelle Obama really cared about children's nutrition she would toss that useless campaign she's doing and get involved with the nutritional aspects of our food chain.

I would encourage you to join groups like Georgia Organics, Southern Foodways and the like. Alabama has an Alabama Organics site but it's just under construction. Georgia Organics is active and has occasional meetings in and around Bowdoin GA.

"Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants = Healthy People" is the usual logic for groups like these although you have to be careful of weird agendas.

This one at Rhodale ( Robert Rhodale was the father of the American Organic Movement) will get you going :-)

I have a couple of FB friends that follow this stuff pretty closely and frequently cross post articles. If not for them, I think I would be in the dark about it. Someone else posted an article from a news team that was supposed to appear on Fox "The Investigators" who, when they tried to do a story on Monsantos hormone injections to increase milk yields, ended up getting fired. Apparently Fox news was threatened by Monsanto and the company caved into legal pressure. And when "The Investigators" were encouraged to sign non disclosure agreements, and they refused, they were fired. One of the most disturbing things to me is how little this stuff is getting tested before it is introduced to our food supply. It's discouraging to think our government is in bed with companies like Monsanto, and that our politicians are being bought by these people. And to think we only used to have pesticides to worry about. I'm going to check out that website you mentioned.

Genetic engineering has been going on for decades....we had dedicated test fields on the family farms for seed variations back in the 60's. Without genetic engineering on food items, the world would have a massive food shortage and world hunger would be far more prevalent than it is.

There is a difference between hybridization and genetic engineering though. Kinda like humans breeding between heritage groups and cloning.
