First of all I will grant you all that I am going to look like a real moron when I pose my question. That being said here it is.
I am a former active duty Marine and as such regard a squared away/clean boat to be the best of boats. Therefore I began my ownership of my Larson in 2002 fully committed to this goal. My primary choice of hull cleaning agents, especially for the removal of those ugly dock rubs has been Soft Scrub. As you all might guess this has not been the best of choices to maintain the shine of the gel coated hull. What if anything might I use to restore the shine? I am not real smart but have an abundance of elbow grease and don't mind doing my penitence.
All suggestions appreciated and all disparaging comments anticipated.

I would suggest you take it to someone that has experience to determine what is needed. It is important to not start out too rough or not rough enough, if the surface has to be sanded.

just takes a little elbow grease

That's all I use, but I would recommend a twirling buffer, not the oscillating buffer. I can't imagine using 3M by hand, it'll work you to death with a buffer, but it's good stuff.
