Irish born Father O'Malley was assigned to a small congregation in rural Texas.
One especially nice spring morning shortly after his arrival he stepped onto his front porch to breath in the fresh clean air. To his shock and surprise he saw a dead jackass laying in the front yard. Not aware of the local custom for handling such situations he called the local sheriff's office. The conversation went:
"Good mornin, this iz deppity Jones aspeekin, How ken Ah hep ye?"
"And the top of the marnin tu yerself. This is Father O'Mally at St. Anns . Oim lookin at a dead jackass layin before me eyes in moi froont yard!"
Deputy Jones, who considers himself to be something of a wit, replies with a bit of a smirk " Wael now Father, aint you the one got the reesponceebility uv takin keer uv the las rites yosef?"
There is silence on the opposite end of the phone.
Finally Father O'Malley speaks "Indeed tis sairtenly true what ye say me boy, Oi'm also obloyged to notify the next of kin...That is the pairpose of this call. Now, good day to ye."
