I have a Mercury MerCrusier & I put it into the water yesterday. Cranked it and ran it 30 minutes or so. When I came back today There was water insode the boat (alot). I put it onto boatramp to see where it woudl leak from and it is right at the back (outside) of the boat. Its where the prop trims. There are 3 flex hoses. 2 are large one is small with a cable running through it I think. That flex hose is cracked and letting water inside.
I knew last year something was up because when we were parked the bildge came on every 30 minutes or so. I,m sorta glad its not the hull but, this could mean I have to drop the foot...
What is the cable to? Thoughts?

That'd be your shift cable boot. You'll get about three posts shortly offering to fix it for ya, for a pile of money.

Well, wrong about one thing anyway. NOT a pile of money! All you have to do is remove the drive, and the small nut holding the cable housing to the gimble housing and simply replace the boot. If you do this yourself, make sure you inspect the cable very closely for rust and corrosion, and if you have ANY doublt replace the cable as well. Prolly a good idea to do it anyway. While you have the drive off go ahead and replace the impeller if you have not done so lately. I will be at Dadeville shop today, if you need me call me please. I think I have several of them in stock, and will gladely explain in person as well.

All Mercruiser shift cables have to be taken out completely and the bellow has to go on from the front side. Also Merc updated their cables and you will notice a nicer feel when shifting if you go with a new Merc cable. Merc also offers a transom repair kit which includes all bellows, gimbal bearing, gaskets, etc to do that job complete. Good luck on doing the job yourself, it can be rather aggravating. Jeff

I have several boats, and from time to time have problems with them. I also have a factory where we have five forklifts. At the factory I have a maintenance guy who among other things fixes the lifts.
This guy is very capable. His hobby is building hotrods. From time to time when I have a boat stuck in the water and no easy way to get it to a mechanic I will have this dude work on it. He can fix it usually with advice from Cat.
I pay this guy $25 an hour 40 hrs per week.
I don't know how much the marina's charge, but if possible I will take my boats to them because it is always cheaper.
By the time my guy figures out what is wrong and gets the parts it just costs more.

a "do it yourself" job on this repair. I'm very good at "do it yourself" and I would not take this on.....I was just trying to give info on confirming the problem. If this looks like the problem, I'm 100% on board with taking it to a professional.
