My 2002 Larson has the typical drop-in hatch amid ship covering the ski storage locker. This hatch has become soft and I suspect has begun to rot out.  Larson informs me that a replacement hatch is not offered as the boat is too old.

Do any of you know of someone who might be able to fabricate a replacement hatch?

How difficult would it be to do myself?

It's probably just a piece of 3/4 plywood with carpet on top and an aluminum angle formed around the edge.  Go get a piece of treated plywood and a strip of carpet to match what you have, some glue, a jig saw, and fix it yourself.  Cost about $50 total and you'll have a bunch of plywood left over for your next project.

If you want the best contact Spookeay Marine (256) 404-1330. Speak to Heather who owns and does the work.she is a true craftswoman.

But, Heather may leave an egg in your boat.  And Dean will surely find it.  (Kiddin' around of course).  I am with WIX on this one.  What are the deminsions of the hatch?

Thanks for all your responses.  I am going to take a shot at fixing it myself (now where did I put that chainsaw?).

Seriously, I will take the hatch out next week and determine how the aluminum trim is attached.  Surely it will serve as an acceptable template for cutting the replacement piece.  Heck, I might even get lucky and be able to re-use the carpet.

Again thanks for the help.

I would suggest using marine plywood and at least fiberglass the top surface and saturate the entire piece with resin prior to fiberglassing the top. Regular treated plywood at your local shop is very poor quality.
If your boat has a rotten hatch cover it probably has a lot of other rotten areas as well. Take a hammer and tap the sid e of the stringers inside the hatch. It should sound very solid.
