The folks in the southern Blue Ridge do love to eat...fried chicken. biscuits with saw mill gravy, country ham, mashed potatoes with saw mill gravy, cornbread with lots of butter, grits with sawmill gravy!! Not surprising they are often of ample girth.
Cletus from Possum Gap went into town for his yearly physical. After being poked and probed the doc tells him "Cletus you need to lose weight. I'm putting you on a diet. For two days I want you to eat as you usually do but on the third day skip the entire day, eat nothing; then repeat, two days eat as usual, on the third day skip all day with no food. Repeat this schedule for two weeks then come bact to see me, you should have lost at least 5 pounds."
In two weeks Cletus returns to the doctor. The doctor is flabbergasted, Cletus has lost nearly 30 pounds. "Cletus you must have really taken that diet to heart" exclaims the doc. Cletus replies "Wail yeah ah shore did doc, but hit near about kilt me a doin it, specially on 'at tird day ever time!" "You mean from the hunger?" inquires the doctor.
"No, hal no" cletus answers. "Hit wus all 'at dad blame skippin whut near bout done me in"
