Anyone have experience with teak swim platforms? I have a customer ask me about how to keep them looking good for a long time.

Renewing Teak is a treasured hobby and passtime (what little I have) for me. My favorite is getting the teak swim locker/floor storage doors and the likes from older boats, renewing them and making small tables, dinner trays and the likes. It is not hard work, but time consuming. The platform on my Master Craft looked like a fine piece of furniture. Really, it did. Remember, never use anything but Teak Oil for the wood. Don't use varnish and the likes. The process to renewing the wood would take me to long to explain on this post, but maybe you could call me. May even be a good article I could contribute to this website. If you take on the task for yourself, and do it right, the result will make you extremely proud. I can order a three part kit for you if you like. They are not expensive. I remember about 30 bucks maybe. If I had one of my projects here at the Lake Store i would post a picture. They are all at Prattville Store. This is an interesting thread.

First clean the wood. A moderate pressure washing usually does the trick, but if the greying is too bad use a 10% bleach solution to wash it down. Rinse well. Once dry, simply start adding coats of teak oil till you get the luster you want. A 100% cotton cloth is recommended over using a brush. I have several pieces that I have re-purposed, including one intact swim platform with 4 inch solid planks. I might even work up a trade with you if you don't want to take on the job, even though it is very simple. All hardware is intact on mine and should slide right on.

I don't remember how you said you prepared yours. I just know how I have done it many times and I got my instructions off the internet so 'it has to be true'. Actually, the first ones I ever did were before AL Gore invented the internet. All of mine have turned out great and it so easy that the last pieces I did were while I was convalescing right after my last surgery while I still had the wound vac pump.

Seeing the ski deck on you Mastercraft.... Thats one reason I want to work on mine.... So at least one part of my boat would be "CAT Worthy"!!!!

Nope, just a little bleach water. The wound vac just hung around the whole time doing it's thing. I would use it to keep a rhythm while I swabbed the teak oil on though.....lol.

The platform is on a 1991 Centurion ski boat. I am doing some fiberglass repair and polishing out the gel coat. The owner asked me about the teak and I wanted to get some info about it before I told him I would do it or not. If he wants me to do it while it is dry in my shop I will give you a call. It has some black areas that will need some attention.
