I never purchase new boat or motors, but this goes to show you how someone who knows boat can get burned. I purchased a 1999 Xpress Bass boat with a Mercury XR6 150HP. I thought I was getting a bargain at just $6K. The boat was nasty to say the least, but I saw a chance to clean this mess up and just knew there was a good boat underneath all the dirt and grim. The motor sounded sweet, but the trolling motor, depth finders were antiquated and in need of replacement. I have rebuilt many boats and brought 99% of them back to 100%, but this time I really got burned.
I had been fishing all day, putting around the lake at low RPM, I thought I would blow the soot out at 5,000 RPM the motor shut down and a loud rattling noise....then BANG! it was frozen up. Back at the ramp I pulled the plugs to see the top left hold completely filled with aluminum slug. OH SH#T!
Took my motor to my old buddy's shop and had him take a look and give me and estimate on repairing the motor. He called me a few hours later and said BOY, you got screwed. Not only did the motor blow but Glen checked the lower unit to see if there was any other problems. Sure enough the forward drive gear and pinion gear had chunks knocked out of them. The boat had a Mercury Cruiser Prop way to big for the motor, the timing had been advanced; plus the water pump and thermostat was shot.
Well I got it back,$4,551 buck later, plus a new prop. Completely rebuilt top down. OUCH!

Purchased the boat off Craig's List; an individual. I should have been more careful, but I was lured in by the price, most of these boat go for 10K+; the motor was running good when I purchased it. Xpress boats are very popular around here and I was hoping to use it one season after re-carpeting and installing a new trolling motor and depth finders then sell it.
Got it fixed now, running like a dream, smooth, my mechanic and his team are old timers in the trade. I have been doing business with them for 40+ years.
Yea. I got the shaft this time, thinks guys, just thought I would share my experience with you. Sometimes you win sometimes you loose. This time it cost me $4551. As my Dad use to say "a pig in a poke"

Over the years I have either worked in the industry and became a dealer for Mercury, Mariner; selling Rangers, Skitters and some of the local brands of boats. In my younger day I would seek out a old tired dog of a boat and refurbish them; then sell it in the spring for a small profit. I had access to parts and I finished the labor. My buddy purchase a 2008 Bass Cat 200 Evinrude and paid 42K for it, I don't think he's had it in the water more than 10 or 12 tomes. He so careful with it that he will not take into the stumps and stand-ups. That's why I had rather have a old beater, I like to fish and to get into where fish are is always a hazardous adventure.
My cuz has an old beater with and 40hp 1984 E-rude, simple and easy to fix. In fact I rebuilt the carburetors last year. Run like a champ. Simple technology.

If the boat would normally go for 10+, you're not too far from where you should be for a boat with a totally rebuilt motor.....it takes away a great deal, but it could be worse.
