Fishing for stripes remains a hit and miss proposition this month. We boated another heavy weight (24#) plus a good size schoolie last Sunday. However, it was extremely hard to find fish yesterday. The water is stained and we're starting to see some trash (pine needles, etc...) arriving in the Kowaliga Basin. It must be even worse on the north end with the river flushing tons of silt into the lake. That was pretty much confirmed yesterday by the appearance of a couple of the guides that have stayed north of Midway for most of the year.
We saw more rain yesterday and last night so the gates will probably be running open again for a few days. That seems to have a negative impact on the stripes as well and water temps just don't seem to be rising. It's an odd year for sure.
The good side is that bait is prolific and when the weather gets back to a more normal pattern, we should see the stripes really putting on the feed bag. We'll keep scouting and let ya'll know when conditions improve. In the mean time,
stay Tooned.

Despite heavy rains again last night, the fishing was pretty good this morning and conditions were very comfortable for those of us chasing stripes. We marked several lone fish around Willow Point, but got a call from Joe who said he had good marks further up lake. He was catching and once we got there, we did too. Had a great crew on board. Our Lady angler, Debra, got her limit plus we added another pair of schoolies to the cooler before we headed back.
Here is the thing that continues to baffle me; why has Wares been so weak in terms of stripes this year? It is slam full of shad, but stripes seem to be avoiding their old hangout. What's the deal?
