I was wondering if anyone has been going after stripers on the fly? I got an 8wt and i'm not sure where to look or what types of flies are hitting. I spend most my time near Bay Pine from the bank but have access to a boat and want to venture out. No fishfinder though, so i'll have to just feel it out. Any suggestions?!?! I posted the below link on the "Fly Rod Setup" and the "Mountain Man" threads below, so at risk of repetition I will link it again. About this time last year I interviewed striper guide David Hare in a series of 3 videos. My goal is to consistently catch stripers on the fly. The first two videos were about stripes in general. The last was fly specific. David's advice to me was to watch them when they make their move into the river section of the lake, that is, north of the railroad trestle in Alex City.

If I were you I would subscribe to David's fishing report or watch him on Facebook. He uses live bait but his posts should give you some indications as to their position.

I caught some in the Kowaliga area in early summer, on Puglisi flies, in about 8 feet of water. Nothing real big. I am still trying to figure it out myself. I feel like as big as LM is, and as big a striped bass population that we have, there should be more people fly fishing for them, especially this time of year when they get more shallow.

Thanks, I went and read those posts and watched the videos. I agree, with the annual striper population/stocking and size of LM, more people should be out there on fly. I'll try up river. Maybe with the cooler temps coming they will be hitting closer to the surface. I located some good shad pattern flies that were available at the Orvis in Atlanta. They closely resemble the gizzard shad (silver/shinny bottoms with blue backs fading dark green in center) that Dave seems to be using and are pretty close in size, 3-5" lengths. I'll let yall know what happens!

Sometime I wonder if it's that LM is deeper than other lakes like Lanier, and therefore makes it harder to find them. I don't know.

Some other good patterns are tied by Henry Cowen, a guide at Lake Lanier. I have read a few articles he has written in some magazines, too.

Check out the warmwater reports section for reports on fly fishing for stripers on Lanier, Allatoona and the 'Hooch in Atlanta. What works there should work here.

Hi Guys,

Update: Went out on LM couple weeks ago and got skunked using large #1 baitfish imitations similar to puglisi flies...so I started looking into what's working in GA. Heres what I found... Lake Lanier folks are mostly using #2 Clouser minnows (and smaller) in Gray/white with red eyes and Henry Cowen's "Something else" pattern in gray/white or olive/white. Went out saturday with them and caught some large spots using both. Didn't find any stripers but they have been off for the last few days apparently.
Also, I ran by the fly shop across from sureshot in alex city a few weeks back, nice guy, ties his own flies, mostly poppers, other floating bugs and very few lefty's deceivers or other baitfish imitations. Said he's planning on upping his stock of supplies (i.e. leaders,lines, rods, reels, tying materials) starting in early spring.

Headed over to LM this weekend to try out my luck with new info and supplies. Any striper action lately for yall?

yes the shop across from Sure Shot - is Big Mike's Baits. His cell number is 770 608 1480. Really nice guy.

I bought some foam poppers etc from him last month before a float trip down the Tallapoosa. I didn't catch much, I discovered that I had to do a lot of paddling and not much fishing. But Mike is a really nice guy that deserves our support.

I tried a Clouser at a school of spots last week, to no avail. I was throwing a pretty big one, from my 9 weight, it was all I had in the truck when I saw them.

I have read about the Cowen Something Else and Near Nuff, hopefully I can find somewhere to buy them. He doesn't have them on his site.

This was about the time of year when I went with David Hare last year, he says it's when the the stripes get shallow enough for a fly. Please post if you have some success!

Update: Went out last saturday at sunrise, caught a few decent size spots on the Cowen's Something else. Could not find any stripers, but I didn't spend much time driving around looking though. Stayed north lake area below railroad bridge and above wind creek. Will be back in a early December and hope to give the striper hunt a longer try then. Y'all keep the updates coming and I will too!
