I am looking for a good quality upright smoker, not like the home depot and bass pro shop versions either, anyone have any suggestions. I have been looking at the one in this link. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have to recommend the Master-built electric smokehouse. I have two right now and have smoked over 500 lbs of meat this summer with no issues. The new models have great features and the pricing is right. Get the larger size 40" from Sam's for about the same or less money as this propane. I have a propane and never use it because the temp can't be controlled. Mack has one too. Check the archives for discussions on this topic. Good luck!

I have both an upright propane and the MB Electric 40". I vote for the electric by far.
I could never get the temp stable on the gas unit. Even a very light breeze would vary the temp by maybe 40*. Plus a breeze sometimes blew out the flame completely, and you don't know it. I put some homemade baffles around the burner on the bottom as a fix, but it still jumped all over on temp.
If you have a well protected area to cook out of the wind, you can smoke up some delicious meats on gas. Including the infamous "smoke ring" and a crispy, crunchy bark.
Good luck.

If you want one I have an Oklahoma Joe for sale. It's powered the old fashioned way with wood or charcoal.

thanks to everyone for the info, I haven't considered electric but will definitely look into it. As for the one for sale I have a horizontal Oklahoma Joe but thanks anyway.

I have a dilema. I've had upright but due to house config I'd have to store it in the carport and use outside. Outside does not work as the temp varies so much as the sunlight moves thru tree limbs, no limbs etc. Just cannot control the temp.

If all goes well, this is the one I want to build this winter.

whoaaa... That is serious business. But, if you indeed build it, please post pictures of the finished box. Man, you could smoke a whole cow in that box!!

Any guesstimate on what this beast would cost to build? Don't know if I have the skills, or patience to construct something this elaborate, but not having to weld is a plus for me. I also was a little confused as to his smoke supply. I would guess he will use the sawdust burner? Other than that I saw no source of smoke, making this a large low heat oven.

I guess about 600-650. Other half ain't said no, but I need to do a takeoff and then we'll see.

The person who published this has done another, so I assume he has several chip smokers.  I have used the gas grill as a smoker and have a couple of smoker boxes myself.

Yes, I will surely document this as I go along.
